Or Soler, I guess. Or someone. Six years of a stud positional prospect is not worth a year and a half of Samardijza. It would be like the Holliday deal all over again, except worse because IMO Russell is a better prospect than CarGo was (though, granted, Holliday was better than Samadijza is...still, though, yuck).
That said, I'd probably have had a similar reaction 20 years ago when Ynoa was a top prospect. Of course, Ynoa was much further from the majors and a pitcher, so it's not the same thing, but still...prospects often don't pan out. We should recognize that this (pretty successful) team was built because Beane and the front office used prospects as trade chips. It's definitely not out of the question that they keep that mentality going to try and win a title this year and/or next.
I'd rather keep Russell, but even if he ends up leaving...well, we'll see. It's been a long time since the A's developed a star or superstar and I'd hate to lose the best chance they've had in eons.
