Roster changes afoot for Palm Beach Cardinals

Four changes announced on Saturday with more on the way for Florida State League club.

Along with the previously-reported news that prized pitching prospect Carlos Martinez has been placed on the disabled list, the A-Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals made three other roster moves on Saturday.

The Florida State League club placed outfielder/infielder Alan Ahmady on the seven-day DL and added two players from extended spring training, also located in Jupiter, Fla. They are pitcher Ryan Sherriff and third baseman Jeremy Patton.

After going 2-for-2 in Friday night's game, Ahmady was removed in the third inning. He suffered a hamstring injury while legging out a double. On the season, the 24-year-old has a line of .295/.383/.411 in 129 at-bats over 38 games. His 15 doubles are the most in the FSL.

Sherriff, a 21-year-old left-hander, finished his rookie 2011 season with Batavia. The Cards' 28th round pick last June threw 50.1 innings between Johnson City and Batavia. Over the two levels, he went 3-3 with an ERA under four. While with the Muckdogs, he held opponents to an impressive .136 average.

Patton, the 38th round pick by the Cardinals in the 2011 draft from Florida International University, posted a .292/.374/.451 line in 226 at-bats over 63 games with Batavia last summer. The 23-year-old also spent two weeks with Quad Cities last month as an injury fill-in.

The club is also reportedly losing starting pitcher Seth Maness to Double-A Springfield, though that may not be announced until the day Maness is scheduled to make his Texas League debut.
