J.C. Menna saved his best for last this season. The right-hander went into his final start of the season carrying an 0-9 record. He earned his only win of the season in dramatic fashion in that final start on September 1.
The A's 2010 14th-round pick spent his second season with the Vermont Lake Monsters in 2012. He improved his numbers across the board, with the exception of his win-loss record. Menna increased his K/9 rate, reduced his BB/9 rate, allowed fewer homeruns and fewer hits and lowered his ERA significantly.
Donald Moore spoke with the New Jersey native just days before his historic no-hit outing.
Donald Moore: How is everything going for you this year?
J.C. Menna: It's going great. You know finish out the season. It's not the season we wanted, of course, but success obviously isn't measured in just wins and losses. It's about player development at this level and stuff like that. You know I have no complaints, just getting a little tired coming in the end, but it's normal and part of the grind for the next few days.
DM: What did you work on in spring training?
JM: I worked on a lot in spring training. There is always something physically you can improve on, but my biggest thing coming into this year after having kind of a down year last year was to be more mentally positive and mentally ready. So I'd have to say the mental aspect of baseball is huge and I just have to work on that the most.
DM: What was your biggest challenge this year?
JM: My biggest challenge this year was probably going out there everyday and just being consistent. Obviously my innings have increased from last year to this year. I realized I was kind of being relied on a lot more on getting deeper into a ball games and helping our bullpen out by going six or seven [innings]. I really hadn't done much last year, but this year I was pretty good at it and was able to help out our bullpen and help the team.
DM: What are your plans for this off season?
JM: Plans for the off-season are pretty simple. I'm going to obviously just take a few weeks off, just rest, rest my body, catch up on some sleep and then, just get back in the gym and get after it and get ready for next spring training. Now that I've been here two years I know what it takes and I gained a lot of knowledge and what I need to do for my body and be prepared for such as long and bigger season.
