A's Make Several Roster Moves

The Oakland A's minor league spring training game schedule begins today. With minor league camp up and running, the A's sent several players down from their major league camp this weekend.

Over the weekend, the Oakland A's re-assigned several players to their minor league camp. On Saturday, non-roster pitchers Sonny Gray, Justin Thomas and Bruce Billings were all sent back to minor league camp. The cuts continued on Sunday, as the A's optioned pitchers Andrew Werner and Jesse Chavez to Triple-A Sacramento and right-hander Michael Ynoa to Low-A Beloit. The A's also re-assigned non-roster players Kyler Newby, Ryan Ortiz, Beau Taylor, Miles Head, Jefry Marte and Addison Russell to minor league camp. The cuts continued into Monday, as pitcher Arnold Leon was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

The A's now have 46 players in big league camp.

Several players sent back to minor league camp had good stints in big league camp. Marte, in his first spring training with the A's, had four hits in 10 at-bats, including two doubles. Russell, despite being the youngest player in camp, held his own both offensively and defensively. He had only four hits in 16 at-bats, but he hit several balls hard that were caught.

On the mound, Chavez allowed only one run on two hits in five innings. He struck-out four. Billings allowed a run in 4.2 innings and he didn't walk a batter.

Leon has had an interesting spring thus far. In his first year as a member of the 40-man roster, the right-hander struggled in big league camp, walking four in three innings. He joined Team Mexico for the WBC last week. It was Leon hitting a batter in Mexico's game against Canada on Saturday that led to a huge brawl. Leon was ejected from the game.

The A's are dealing with several minor injuries in camp right now, as well. Second baseman Jemile Weeks missed all of last week with a shoulder bruise, although he is expected to return to game action soon. Scott Sizemore, who is competing with Weeks for the A's starting second base job, also missed time last week. He had a bruised hand caused by a hit-by-pitch. Sizemore returned to the line-up late last week and the injury shouldn't impact him further.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Michael Taylor has been out with a cut finger.

A's Opening Day starter Brett Anderson left his Sunday start after only eight pitches when he strained a back muscle reaching for a throw at third. Anderson isn't expected to miss too much time with the injury.
