Oakland A's 2012 Draft In Review

The 2013 MLB Draft is next week. What has become of the Oakland A's 2012 draft class? We take a pick-by-pick look at where the A's 2012 draftees are playing this season and how they are faring.

Height: 6-1
Weight: 195
Hometown: Pace, FL
Current Team: Stockton Ports
Position: SS

ANALYSIS: Addison Russell has been on a fast-track since the A's signed him last season. Russell was the youngest player to be invited to big league spring training in all of baseball and is one of the youngest position players in the California League.

It has been an adjustment for Russell to go from short-season and Low-A ball last year to High-A in 2013. Russell is holding his own with six homeruns and a 724 OPS in 39 games, but he has an uncharacteristically low .210 average.

Russell did a solid job of getting on-base in April, walking 14 times in 15 games. In May, he has hit for more power (.433 SLG), but his plate discipline has suffered. He is still looking for a consistent run of success in the Cal League, but he has hit well enough for the A's to leave him at that level. With his talent, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Russell with a significantly better slashline by the end of the season.

Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0

Hometown: Upland, CA
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: SS
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Daniel Robertson's 2013 season got off to a slow start, as he spent the first month of the regular season at extended spring training rehabbing a surgically-repaired knee (Robertson tore his meniscus during fall Instructs).

Robertson got off to a red-hot start with the Snappers, but he has cooled over the past few weeks, hitting .238/.297/.345 during the month of May. Last season, when Robertson was on the same team as Russell in Arizona, Robertson moved over to third base. However, with Russell in Stockton, Robertson has seen regular reps at shortstop. Both Russell and Robertson have shown significant promise with the glove at short. Like Russell, Robertson is adjusting to the higher-level pitching and should hit his stride at the plate at some-point during the summer.

Round

Oakland Athletics
Player: Matt Olson
Height: 6-4
Weight: 225
Hometown: Lilburn, GA
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: 1B
Bats: L
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Since signing with the A's out of a Georgia HS last summer, Matt Olson has shown plus power. The left-handed hitting first-baseman was projected to hit for power when he was drafted, but the A's were pleasantly surprised to see that power develop so quickly. Olson had a .521 SLG last season in short-season ball and he has a .431 SLG in the notoriously pitcher-friendly Midwest League.

As with many power hitters, Olson has struggled at times to make consistent contact. He already has 55 strike-outs in 181 at-bats this season and he struck-out 50 times in 180 at-bats last season. Olson has been streaky for the Snappers this year, but still has a respectable .243/.325/.431 line. Olson is not alone experiencing inconsistency as a young player in his first full pro season.

Round
2
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-2
Weight: 230
Hometown: Toney, AL
Current Team: Beloit Snappers

Position: C
Bats: L
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Bruce Maxwell was the first college player selected by the A's last season, but he was far from a traditional college pick as a recently converted catcher from a small collegiate program. Maxwell had a reputation in college for remarkable contact skills at the plate, and he has demonstrated those skills as a pro. Last season, he struck-out only 38 times in 67 games in short-season ball. This year, Maxwell has just 19 strike-outs in 41 games for Beloit.

Maxwell has also hit for average with the Snappers, hitting at a .306 clip. With a .306/.374/.431 line in 144 at-bats, Maxwell has been the Snappers most reliable hitter in the early going this season. He has only two homeruns, but he has 12 doubles and has shown impressive power in batting practice. Defensively, he is still a work-in-progress behind the plate, but he has the physical tools to be a solid backstop. The A's won't rush Maxwell given all he has to learn about being a catcher, but he could get a taste of High-A ball at the end of the season if he continues to hit as he has thus far this year.

Round
2
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0
Weight: 190
Hometown: Kokomo, IN
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: The A's coaching staff were very excited about the potential of Nolan Sanburn heading into the 2013 spring training. The hard-throwing right-hander from Arkansas showed electric stuff in a brief stint with the short-season Vermont Lake Monsters and during the A's fall Instructional League. Unfortunately, Sanburn strained his shoulder during spring training and is rehabbing the injury at extended spring training.

Sanburn is on a throwing program, but there isn't a target date set yet for when he will be ready for regular season action. The A's are likely to be cautious with Sanburn, as shoulder injuries are often the trickiest to deal with for pitchers.

Round
3
Oakland Athletics
Player: Kyle Twomey
Height: 6-3
Weight: 180
Hometown: Placentia, CA
Current Team: USC
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L
ANALYSIS: The A's failed to sign Twomey, a left-hander out of a Southern California high school. He has pitched regularly as a starter for USC all season as a true freshman. Although the numbers aren't pretty (5.55 ERA, 50:36 K:BB in 71.1 innings), Twomey has shown promise and could be a much-talked about name leading up to the 2015 draft. The A's will get the 106th overall pick in this year's draft as compensation for not signing Twomey.

Round
4
Oakland Athletics
Player: B.J. Boyd
Height: 6-10
Weight: 205
Hometown: Palo Alto, CA
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: CF
Bats: L
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: B.J. Boyd had an exciting professional debut with the A's last season, swiping 16 bags in 39 games for the A's Arizona Rookie League club. The Palo Alto High School graduate was a two-sport star as an amateur and he showed standout athleticism and surprising polish last year in his debut season.

Boyd is currently playing for the A's extended spring club in Phoenix and he is slated to start his regular season with the short-season Vermont Lake Monsters in June.

Round
5
Oakland Athletics
Player: Max Muncy
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205
Hometown: Keller, TX
Current Team: Stockton Ports
Position: 1B
Bats: L
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Max Muncy was the first member of the A's 2012 draft class to play for a full-season minor league affiliate when he debuted with the Low-A Burlington Bees last season. Muncy posted respectable numbers with the Bees (816 OPS) and earned a promotion to High-A Stockton to start this year.

In April, Muncy was one of the top hitters in all of the California League, and he posted a 990 OPS. He has cooled some in May (798 OPS), but is still having an excellent season for the Ports (874 OPS and a team-leading nine homeruns). Muncy is an above-average defensive first-baseman and his plate discipline is among the best in the A's system (he currently has a 39:34 BB:K ratio). The A's are a bit back-logged at first base at the moment, but should the hot-hitting Anthony Aliotti find his way up to Triple-A, Muncy could take his place with Double-A Midland this season.

Round
6
Oakland Athletics
Player: Seth Streich
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200
Hometown: Ridgeway, PA
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: The A's liked the potential in two-way player Seth Streich's pitching arm coming out of college. Streich struck-out 48 batters in 37.1 innings in his pro debut last season and has been in the Beloit starting rotation this year. Streich has had an up-and-down season thus far, as he has a 6.65 ERA and a 34:23 K:BB ratio in 44.2 innings.

The A's coaching staff has been working with Streich on his mechanics, specifically on getting the timing of his delivery down by coordinating his upper and lower halves. The A's like the movement on his pitches and his velocity and believe that he will see significantly better results once his mechanics improve.

Round
7
Oakland Athletics
Player: Cody Kurz
Height: 0-0
Weight: 0
Hometown: Ventura, CA
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Cody Kurz was the A's first junior college pick last season. The big right-hander came to the A's with a strong arm but limited baseball experience, as he had been a highly recruited football player in high school. Kurz struggled badly with his command in his pro debut in Arizona last season and will be a project for the A's minor league pitching coaching staff. However, if he can put it together, Kurz has the potential to be a power-arm out of the bullpen. He is currently at extended spring training competing for a spot on the A's short-season Vermont roster.

Round
8
Oakland Athletics
Player: Kris Hall
Height: 6-3
Weight: 215
Hometown: Strongville, OH
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Kris Hall struck out 27 in 29.1 innings in his pro debut last season for the AZL A's and short-season Vermont, but he struggled with his command, walking 15. Hall finished the year on the DL, but he was able to start spring training on time and began the year on the Beloit Snappers' roster. Hall has made seven appearances for Beloit (two starts) and is back on the DL after posting a 7.97 ERA with 15 walks in 20.1 innings.

When healthy, Hall has a lively fastball and a solid off-speed arsenal.

Round
9
Oakland Athletics
Player: Dakota Bacus
Height: 6-2
Weight: 205
Hometown: Moline, IL
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: An Illinois native, Dakota Bacus has taken advantage of pitching close to home in the Midwest League. The big right-hander has averaged a strike-out an inning for the Snappers after dominating the Arizona Rookie League in his pro debut season last year.

The A's are monitoring Bacus' innings, limiting him to four innings or less early in the season, but he should continue to stretch out his innings-totals as the season progresses. Bacus has shown solid command and the ability to induce groundballs at a high rate thus far this year and is one of the most promising pitchers on the Snappers' staff.

Round
10
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-9
Weight: 175
Hometown: Buena Park, CA
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: OF
Bats: L
Throws: L
ANALYSIS: The speedy Brett Vertigan spent his pro debut season with short-season Vermont, mostly hitting in the lead-off spot. Vertigan has assumed those duties much of the year with Low-A Beloit, as well. The centerfielder has done a solid job getting on-base for the Snappers, posting a .351 OBP in his first 48 games. Vertigan has a 24:18 BB:K and has stolen nine bases in 11 chances, making him an ideal table-setter in that line-up. Vertigan hit an even .300 in April before slumping at the start of May, but he has swung the bat well over the past week.

Round
11
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-11
Weight: 185
Hometown: Acworth, GA
Current Team: Georgia Tech
Position: SS
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Matt Gonzalez chose to go to Tech rather than sign with the A's out of high school. As a freshman, Gonzalez has appeared in 57 games for the Yellow Jackets, hitting .294/.329/.393 in 214 at-bats.

Round
12
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-3
Weight: 210
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Current Team: Stony Brook
Position: 3B
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Like Gonzalez, Johnny Caputo chose to go to college rather than sign a pro contract. The Canadian national team member has appeared in 59 games as a freshman at Stony Brook, batting .271/.310/.360 in 225 at-bats. Caputo has yet to homer in college, but he has five triples and 10 doubles.

Round
13
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-5
Weight: 220
Hometown: Blue Springs, MO
Current Team: Dallas Baptist
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Stuart Pudenz was an ace reliever for the Vermont Lake Monsters in his pro debut season. He has continued to pitch well for the Snappers in a relief role this season. Pudenz missed a month of the season on the DL, but in 10 innings, he has allowed only two runs and six hits. He has struck-out 10 and has walked three.

Round
14
Oakland Athletics
Player: Austin House
Height: 6-5
Weight: 210
Hometown: Albuquerque, NM
Current Team: New Mexico
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: After a stellar pro debut season during which he dominated the New York-Penn League and got a taste of the Midwest League, Austin House has continued to impress in his first full professional season. Although two poor outings have inflated his ERA to 4.03, House has plus change-up that has grabbed the notice of the A's coaching staff. He is still working on fastball command and on his breaking ball, but with his velocity and his change-up, House could move quickly once his fastball command comes together.

Round
15
Oakland Athletics
Player: Vince Voiro
Height: 6-4
Weight: 200
Hometown: Cherry Hill, NJ
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: A Penn alum, Vince Voiro spent his 2012 debut season in the Arizona Rookie League, but he pitched well enough to jump to full-season ball at the start of the 2013 season. The right-hander has been a tandem starter for the Beloit Snappers this season, working mostly four-inning outings. He has a 3.55 ERA and a 33:16 K:BB ratio in 33 innings this season for the Snappers. Voiro has yet to allow a homerun this season.

Round
16
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-8
Weight: 170
Hometown: Bronx, NY
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: SS
Bats: B
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Like Boyd, Melvin Mercedes had an electric pro debut with the AZL A's last year. The junior college product hit .381 with a .440 OBP and 10 doubles in 105 at-bats. Mercedes has a small build (5'8''), but he is very athletic and has a good knack for hitting. He should start his regular season with short-season Vermont in June.

Round
17
Oakland Athletics
Player: Tyler Olson
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190
Hometown: Spokane, WA
Current Team: Gonzaga
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: L
ANALYSIS: A redshirt junior, Tyler Olson chose to return to Gonzaga for a fifth season rather than sign with the A's last year. The left-hander has had a strong season for the Zags, going 9-4. His 2.48 ERA is the best on the team, even better than teammate Marco Gonzales' 2.80 ERA. Gonzales is a potential first-round pick and has drawn several scouts to the Northwest, giving teammates like Olson a chance to be seen, as well. Although Olson may not go as high as the 17th round in this year's draft, he is likely to be picked again. It wouldn't be shocking to see the A's take him for a second-straight year.

Round
18
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170
Hometown: Plainfield, IL
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Derek DeYoung threw less than an inning in his pro debut season with the AZL A's, but he has been a regular part of the Beloit Snappers' tandem starting rotation this year. The junior college product has a 3.03 ERA and a 30:18 K:BB ratio in 38.2 innings this season. He has allowed just one homerun.

Round
19
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180
Hometown: Yabucoa, PR
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: OF
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Robert Martinez was the only A's pick out of Puerto Rico last year. He made his pro debut at the A's Dominican Academy and suited up for the A's DSL club. Martinez acquitted himself well in the DSL, posting a .442 OBP in limited action (33 at-bats). Martinez is currently at the A's extended spring training camp in Phoenix and is likely to make his US regular season debut on the A's AZL roster this season.

Round
20
Oakland Athletics
Player: Boog Powell
Height: 6-10
Weight: 170
Hometown: Mission Viejo, CA
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: OF
Bats: L
Throws: L
ANALYSIS: Armed with the best nickname of any A's draft pick, Herschel "Boog" Powell hit .306 with a .383 OBP for the A's AZL club in his pro debut season. The outfielder didn't show much power in his pro debut, but he displayed excellent bat control. Powell struck-out just nine times in 111 at-bats and he walked 15 times. Powell is currently at extended spring training vying for a spot on the A's short-season A roster.

Round
21
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-2
Weight: 175
Hometown: West Chester, OH
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Tyler Hollstegge spent his pro debut season with the AZL A's, appearing in 19 games as a reliever. He posted a 4.86 ERA and had a 35:22 K:BB ratio in 33.1 innings. Hollstegge is currently pitching at the A's Extended Spring camp and should be on the Vermont Opening Day roster.

Round
22
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-2
Weight: 195
Hometown: Bowie, MD
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: OF
Bats: L
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: After a record-breaking career at Radford, Matt Hillsinger signed with the A's after the draft and made his pro debut in Arizona. He appeared in only nine games, collecting five hits and five walks in 22 official at-bats. He is currently competing in the A's Extended Spring camp.

Round
23
Oakland Athletics
Player: Tucker Healy
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210
Hometown: Needham, MA
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Tucker Healy has been dominant out of the Snappers' bullpen in his first full professional season. In 11 appearances, Healy has a 1.13 ERA and a 30:3 K:BB ratio in 20.1 innings pitched. He has allowed just 15 hits and three earned runs this season. He could get a shot with High-A Stockton later this season.

Round
24
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-1
Weight: 205
Hometown: Tucson, AZ
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Kayvon Bahramzadeh had an unusual pro debut with the AZL A's. In 37 innings, Bahramzadeh posted an ugly 7.30 ERA, but he struck-out 48 and walked just seven. He did allow seven homeruns, a likely indication that he wasn't locating within the strike-zone as well as he could be. He is currently at extended spring training competing for a spot on the Vermont roster.

Round
25
Oakland Athletics
Player: Derek Hansen
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200
Hometown: Fergus Falls, MN
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: A two-way player at Augustana College in South Dakota, Derek Hansen was exclusively a pitcher for the AZL A's during his pro debut. He threw 20.1 innings and posted a 4.87 ERA with a 24:10 K:BB ratio. Hansen is also at extended spring training preparing for the short-season.

Round
26
Oakland Athletics
Player: Lee Sosa
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200
Hometown: Bronx, NY
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Lee Sosa has been the talk of the A's extended spring camp, as his velocity has jumped into the mid-90s and he has flashed an improved breaking ball and change-up. Sosa, a native of the Bronx, is ticketed to pitch in the New York-Penn League at the start of that season. He threw 24.2 innings in the AZL last season, posting a 4.74 ERA and a 29:22 K:BB ratio.

Round
27
Oakland Athletics
Player: Ryan Mathews
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185
Hometown: Orlando, FL
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: OF
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Ryan Mathews has been one of the surprise stories of the A's 2012 draft class thus far. A relatively unknown college senior sign, Mathews played his pro debut season in the Arizona Rookie League, but he made the jump to the full-season Midwest League at the start of the 2013 season. Mathews was a bench player at the start of the year, but he has played himself into more significant playing time and is now one of the Snappers' top hitters with a 791 OPS and five homeruns in 131 at-bats.

On top of Mathews' potent bat, he receives high praise from teammates and coaches for his leadership in the clubhouse.

Round
28
Oakland Athletics
Player: Phil Pohl
Height: 6-11
Weight: 215
Hometown: Cooperstown, NY
Current Team: Stockton Ports
Position: C
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Phil Pohl has been another surprise performer in the early going this season. Another senior sign, Pohl began the 2013 season in Beloit but was sent back to extended spring training a few days into the season when Nick Rickles was sent to Beloit. Ryan Ortiz's promotion to Sacramento opened a spot for Pohl in Stockton and he has become an important player for the Ports this May. In 48 at-bats, the catcher is batting .333/.411/.458 with a homer and three doubles.

Round
29
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0
Weight: 190
Hometown: Weatherford, TX
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L
ANALYSIS: The A's didn't take many left-handed pitchers in last year's draft. Taylor Massey was one and the Dallas Baptist alum made his debut pitching in the Arizona Rookie League. In 17 outings out of the bullpen, Massey had a 3.00 ERA and a 27:8 K:BB ratio. He is currently pitching in extended spring training and should be on the Vermont staff.

Round
30
Oakland Athletics
Player: Chris Wolfe
Height: 6-11
Weight: 150
Hometown: Houston, TX
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: SS
Bats: B
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: The A's took several shortstops in the 2012 draft, so playing time was somewhat limited for Wolfe in his pro debut last year. The switch-hitting Grambling State alum had only 48 at-bats in 21 games for the AZL A's last season. He had an even 1:1 K:BB ratio and a solid .373 OBP. Wolfe is currently vying for a spot on one of the A's short-season rosters at extended spring training.

Round
31
Oakland Athletics
Player: Ryan Gorton
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215
Hometown: Tigard, OR
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Ryan Gorton was set to sign with the A's when the team discovered a torn ligament in his knee that caused him to fail his physical. He spent a year rehabbing and coaching on the Oregon State staff before finally joining the A's organization. After some time in extended spring training, Gorton was sent out as an extra player to Sacramento during their recent series in Tucson, but he wasn't added to the roster. He should surface during the short-season schedule.

Round
32
Oakland Athletics
Player: Ryan Dull
Height: 6-11
Weight: 175
Hometown: Winston-Salem, NC
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Ryan Dull has been a revelation since turning pro. The right-handed reliever had 47 strike-outs and only nine walks in 31.2 innings for the A's two short-season squads last year, and he has been even better this year for Beloit. In 19.2 innings for the Snappers, Dull has 28 strike-outs and only three walks. He has allowed just 14 base-runners and has a 1.37 ERA. Dull has served as Beloit's closer and he has nine saves.

Dull doesn't have a mid-90s fastball, but his high-80s, low-90s heater has good sink and he is very aggressive on the mound. He could be in-line for a mid-season promotion to High-A Stockton if there is an opening in the Ports' bullpen.

Round
33
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180
Hometown: Chatsworth, CA
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Tyler Johnson helped lead Stony Brook deep into the college post-season last season before joining the A's. The right-hander made his pro debut in the Arizona Rookie League, where he made 14 relief appearances. Johnson had a 3.33 ERA and a 21:7 K:BB ratio in 27 innings for the AZL A's. Johnson is currently pitching in extended spring and could be moved back to the starting rotation at the start of the short-season schedules.

Round

Hometown: Modesto, CA
Current Team: UCSB
Position: SS
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Devon Gradford elected to go to UCSB rather than sign with the A's out of a Modesto-area high school. The middle infielder appeared in just 27 games during his freshman season, collecting 45 at-bats. He hit .222/.311/.367 for the Gauchos.

Round

Oakland Athletics
Player: Brett Sunde
Height: 6-10
Weight: 185
Hometown: Madison Heights, MI
Current Team: Western Michigan
Position: C
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Like Gradford, Brett Sunde elected to go the college route rather than turn pro last season. Sunde appeared in 48 games during his freshman season, and he hit .238 with four extra-base hits. A catcher, Sunde impressed defensively.

Round
36
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-3
Weight: 185
Hometown: South Jordan, UT
Current Team: Salt Lake City CC
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Connor Williams had a commitment to Utah, but when he elected not to sign with the A's, he changed course and went the junior college route, making him eligible for the draft this season and next. Williams was listed as a pitcher and an outfielder, but he made only a few appearances on the mound and saw the bulk of his playing time in the outfield this season. Williams had a productive season at the plate, batting .336/.440/.536 in 125 at-bats. He also stole 14 bases in 14 chances.

Round
37
Oakland Athletics
Player: John Wooten
Height: 6-4
Weight: 215
Hometown: Goldsboro, NC
Current Team: Beloit Snappers
Position: 1B
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: John Wooten hasn't let being a low-round pick stop him from making an impact as a pro. He was one of the Vermont Lake Monsters' top hitters last year during his pro debut season and he made his full-season debut with Burlington late in the year. This season, Wooten has been a steady force for the Beloit Snappers. Through 49 games, he has a .291/.348/.478 line with eight homeruns in 182 at-bats.

Round
38
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-3
Weight: 200
Hometown: Huntington Beach, CA
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: A redshirt junior last season, Drummond was set to pitch a fifth season for USD when he was suspended by the NCAA for a PED violation. He elected to play for the NAIA's Arizona Christian College in 2013, where he has been throwing bullpens for scouts and he has reportedly shown plus velocity. He has been drafted three times already in his life and is likely to be drafted a fourth time, provided teams aren't scared off by the PED suspension.

Round
39
Oakland Athletics
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180
Hometown: Roseville, CA
Current Team: Sierra College
Position: P
Bats: L
Throws: L
ANALYSIS: The Roseville product Dalton Blaser went the junior college route. The outfielder had a solid season in the Lake Tahoe area, batting .317 with 22 RBI and seven stolen bases in 40 games played. Blaser was teammates with his brother Nick this season at Sierra.

Round

Current Team: Cal State Fullerton
Position: SS

ANALYSIS: David Olmedo-Barrera didn't receive much playing time with baseball powerhouse Fullerton this season, but he figures to be a more prominent player for the Titans in future years. Olmedo-Barrera appeared in two games but didn't have an official at-bat.

Hometown: Pace, FL
Current Team: Stockton Ports
Position: SS

Throws: R
ANALYSIS: Addison Russell has been on a fast-track since the A's signed him last season. Russell was the youngest player to be invited to big league spring training in all of baseball and is one of the youngest position players in the California League.

\r\n\r\nIt has been an adjustment for Russell to go from short-season and Low-A ball last year to High-A in 2013. Russell is holding his own with six homeruns and a 724 OPS in 39 games, but he has an uncharacteristically low .210 average.

\r\n\r\nRussell did a solid job of getting on-base in April, walking 14 times in 15 games.

\r\n\r\nRobertson got off to a red-hot start with the Snappers, but he has cooled over the past few weeks, hitting .238/.297/.345 during the month of May.

\r\n\r\nAs with many power hitters, Olson has struggled at times to make consistent contact.

Height: 6-2

\r\n\r\nMaxwell has also hit for average with the Snappers, hitting at a .306 clip.

[MEDTHUMBNAIL:1084237]
Height: 6-0

Hometown: Kokomo, IN
Current Team: Extended Spring
Position: P
Bats: R
Throws: R
ANALYSIS: The A's coaching staff were very excited about the potential of Nolan Sanburn heading into the 2013 spring training. The hard-throwing right-hander from Arkansas showed electric stuff in a brief stint with the short-season Vermont Lake Monsters and during the A's fall Instructional League. Unfortunately, Sanburn strained his shoulder during spring training and is rehabbing the injury at extended spring training.

\r\n\r\nSanburn is on a throwing program, but there isn't a target date set yet for when he will be ready for regular season action. The A's are likely to be cautious with Sanburn, as shoulder injuries are often the trickiest to deal with for pitchers.\r\n

The A's will get the 106th overall pick in this year's draft as compensation for not signing Twomey.\r\n

Bats: L

\r\n\r\nBoyd is currently playing for the A's extended spring club in Phoenix and he is slated to start his regular season with the short-season Vermont Lake Monsters in June.

\r\n\r\nIn April, Muncy was one of the top hitters in all of the California League, and he posted a 990 OPS.

\r\n\r\nThe A's coaching staff has been working with Streich on his mechanics, specifically on getting the timing of his delivery down by coordinating his upper and lower halves. The A's like the movement on his pitches and his velocity and believe that he will see significantly better results once his mechanics improve.

\r\n\r\nWhen healthy, Hall has a lively fastball and a solid off-speed arsenal.

ANALYSIS: An Illinois native, Dakota Bacus has taken advantage of pitching close to home in the Midwest League. The big right-hander has averaged a strike-out an inning for the Snappers after dominating the Arizona Rookie League in his pro debut season last year.

\r\n\r\nThe A's are monitoring Bacus' innings, limiting him to four innings or less early in the season, but he should continue to stretch out his innings-totals as the season progresses. Bacus has shown solid command and the ability to induce groundballs at a high rate thus far this year and is one of the most promising pitchers on the Snappers' staff.

He is still working on fastball command and on his breaking ball, but with his velocity and his change-up, House could move quickly once his fastball command comes together.\r\n

The right-hander has been a tandem starter for the Beloit Snappers this season, working mostly four-inning outings. It wouldn't be shocking to see the A's take him for a second-straight year.\r\n

Ryan Ortiz's promotion to Sacramento opened a spot for Pohl in Stockton and he has become an important player for the Ports this May. Wolfe is currently vying for a spot on one of the A's short-season rosters at extended spring training.\r\n

[MEDTHUMBNAIL:1073905]

[MEDTHUMBNAIL:1170586]

\r\n\r\nDull doesn't have a mid-90s fastball, but his high-80s, low-90s heater has good sink and he is very aggressive on the mound. He could be in-line for a mid-season promotion to High-A Stockton if there is an opening in the Ports' bullpen.\r\n

Johnson is currently pitching in extended spring and could be moved back to the starting rotation at the start of the short-season schedules.\r\n

ANALYSIS: Devon Gradford elected to go to UCSB rather than sign with the A's out of a Modesto-area high school. The middle infielder appeared in just 27 games during his freshman season, collecting 45 at-bats. He hit .222/.311/.367 for the Gauchos.\r\n

ANALYSIS: Like Gradford, Brett Sunde elected to go the college route rather than turn pro last season. Sunde appeared in 48 games during his freshman season, and he hit .238 with four extra-base hits. A catcher, Sunde impressed defensively. \r\n

He also stole 14 bases in 14 chances.\r\n
