A's Claim Buss

The Oakland A's claimed outfielder Nick Buss off of waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. In a corresponding move, the A's placed RHP A.J. Griffin on the 60-day disabled list.

The Oakland A's added outfielder Nick Buss to their 40-man roster on Sunday. Buss had been designated for assignment on Wednesday by the Dodgers when LA needed to add a starting pitcher to their roster for a double-header.

Buss had been part of the Dodgers' organization since 2008, when he was selected out USC in the eighth round by LA. Buss was teammates at USC with current and former A's players Ryan Cook, Tommy Milone and Grant Green.

Buss is a career .284/.338/.438 hitter in seven minor league seasons. He was a Pacific Coast League All-Star last season with Albuquerque when he hit .303/.363/.525 with 17 homers, 11 triples and 29 doubles. He also drove-in 100 runs. Buss earned a September call-up with the Dodgers and he appeared in eight games with LA last season. He had two hits in 19 at-bats.

A bit of a late-bloomer, Buss posted mediocre numbers over the first two-and-a-half seasons in the minors before breaking out in 2011 with High-A Rancho Cucamonga. That year he hit .328 with 14 homers and 28 stolen bases. Buss moved up to Double-A in 2012 and hit only .272 with eight homers. Despite that somewhat disappointing season, he moved up to Triple-A in 2013 and had a big season.

This season, Buss has appeared in 26 games for Triple-A Albuquerque. He is batting .261/.330/.391 in 92 at-bats. Buss has been assigned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Buss is a solid all-around athlete with good speed and the ability to play all three outfield positions. He is a good contact hitter who has never struck-out more than 90 times in a season. Buss isn't a prototypical middle-of-the-order thumper, but he has some pop in his bat. He will join a Sacramento outfield that includes Shane Peterson, Michael Taylor, Kent Matthes and Jake Goebbert.

If Buss reaches the big leagues with the A's, he will share a nickname with Oakland's hitting coach, as Buss is also known as 'Chili'.
