'Hounds, Ports Drop Game Ones

The Midland RockHounds and the Stockton Ports got their post-seasons underway on Wednesday night.

RockHounds Drop Game One to Frisco

A nightmare first inning left the Midland RockHounds in a 6-0 hole and they couldn't recover, dropping game one of their best-of-five series to the Frisco RoughRiders, 7-3.

Starter Nate Long allowed a lead-off homer to Odubel Herrera, but he should have been out of the inning with only that run scoring. Instead, an infield hit, a missed catch error, a wild pitch, a pop-up that fell in, a double and another missed catch error led to five unearned runs.

Frisco would score just one more run, but Midland couldn't mount a comeback. The RockHounds scored twice in the second and once in the eighth. Kenny Wilson had two hits, including a triple, and Kent Matthes and Conner Crumbliss each reached base twice. The RockHounds were two-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

McQuall, Rawhide Rout Ports

The Stockton Ports will be facing an elimination game when they take on the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports lost game one of their best-of-three game series to Visalia, 13-3.

DH Steve McQuall hit three homers for Visalia, and the Rawhide pounded the Ports' pitching staff for seven extra-base hits. Stockton also committed three errors.

The Ports led, 3-1, in the bottom of the fourth, but the Rawhide exploded for five runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. Starter Tim Alderson allowed six runs in 3.1 innings. Reliever Michael Ynoa was also touched for four runs in a third of an inning. He left the game with an injury after an errant pick-off throw to first base.

The Ports had 10 hits and five walks, but they left 14 runners on base. Catcher Beau Taylor had a homer and reached base four times. Matt Olson had two doubles and three hits, while Daniel Robertson reached base four times with two hits and two walks.
