A's Promote From Within To Fill MLB Staff

The Oakland A's announced their 2015 major league coaching staff on Thursday. Included within those announcements were the promotions of three longtime members of the A's organization.

The Oakland A's major league coaching staff is set for the 2015 season. Earlier this week, the A's announced that Mike Aldrete would be joining the staff as the team's bench coach. On Thursday, Oakland named former bullpen coach Darren Bush the team's new hitting coach. The A's also announced that former minor league pitching coordinator Scott Emerson would serve as the team's bullpen coach and former minor league hitting coordinator Marcus Jensen would serve as the team's assistant coach for hitting and catching.

Bush has been coaching in the A's organization since 2005, when he served as the hitting coach for the High-A Stockton Ports. After two seasons as the hitting coach with Stockton, Bush was named the Ports' manager. He led Stockton to a California League title in 2008. In 2009, he took home a championship as the manager of the Double-A Midland RockHounds. Among those who played for Bush during those years were current A's stars Sean Doolittle and Josh Donaldson. Bush managed at the Triple-A level for two seasons (2011 and 2012) before joining the A's staff as the bullpen coach in 2013. Under Bush's watchful eye, the A's have had one of the best bullpens in baseball the past two seasons. Around baseball, Bush is often mentioned as a future candidate for a big league managerial position.

In 2007, I spoke with Bush when he was first named the manager of the Ports. Click here to read that interview.

Emerson, better known as "Emo", has been coaching in the A's system since 2003, when he debuted as the pitching coach of the High-A Modesto A's. Emerson spent four seasons as the A's High-A pitching coach, before moving up to Double-A Midland in 2007. He was the pitching coach on Bush's 2009 title team with the RockHounds. Emo served as the A's Triple-A pitching coach in 2011 and 2012 before being named the organization's minor league pitching coordinator before the 2013 season. Emo has worked closely with many pitchers on the A's current 40-man roster, including Sonny Gray, Jarrod Parker, A.J. Griffin, Jesse Chavez, Sean Doolittle, Evan Scribner, Fernando Rodriguez, Michael Ynoa, Arnold Leon, Josh Lindblom and Dan Otero.

Before the 2013, I spoke with Emo about his new position as the A's minor league pitching coordinator and his pitching philosophies. Click here to read that interview.

Jensen, the A's new big league assistant coach, has been coaching in the A's system since 2007. He was a hitting coach in 2007 and 2008 and then became the A's Arizona Rookie League manager in 2009, a position he held through the 2013 season. He also served as the organization's roving catching instructor. In 2012, Jensen led the AZL A's to the league championship game. His team that season included Addison Russell, Daniel Robertson, Matt Olson, Boog Powell, among others. Jensen took over as the A's minor league hitting coordinator last season. Under his watch, the A's had two hitters lead their league in hits, one hitter lead all of the minor leagues in OBP, one hitter lead his league in homers, two lead his league in walks and two lead his league in doubles. In his new position, Jensen will be responsible for working with the A's catchers on their defense and will assist Bush with the hitting coach duties. Several teams have added assistant hitting coaches over the past few years, and that is a trend that is likely to continue around baseball.

Last off-season, I spoke with Jensen about his new role as the A's minor league hitting coordinator, as well as his hitting philosophies and his work with A's minor league catchers. Click here for that interview.

The A's also announced that Tye Waller and Mike Gallego would return as the A's base coaches and Curt Young would return as the A's pitching coach. Assistant coach Ariel Prieto will not be part of the A's 2015 big league staff. The entire A's 2015 major league coaching staff is set as follows:

Manager: Bob Melvin
Bench Coach: Mike Aldrete
Pitching Coach: Curt Young
First Base Coach: Tye Waller
Third Base Coach: Mike Gallego
Bullpen Coach: Scott Emerson
Assistant Hitting/Catching Coach: Marcus Jensen
