Zaidi Named GM of Dodgers
Longtime Oakland A's front office executive Farhan Zaidi was officially named the General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday. Zaidi is part of a major overhaul of the Dodgers' front office. Since the start of the off-season, the Dodgers have re-assigned General Manager Ned Coletti and hired away former Tampa Bay Rays' GM Andrew Friedman to be the team's President of Baseball Operations. The Dodgers have also lost longtime Scouting Director Logan White to the San Diego Padres and farm director De Jon Watson to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Zaidi spent 10 years in the A's front office and was most recently the team's Assistant General Manager and Director of Baseball Operations. During his tenure with the A's, Oakland had four post-season appearances and won three AL West titles. The Dodgers have won two straight NL West titles, but they are coming off of a disappointing first-round exit in the post-season. The Dodgers have one of the biggest payrolls in baseball, but they have hired a front office full of executives from small market franchises.
Zaidi is the second member of the A's front office to leave this off-season. Sam Geaney, the team's International Scouting Coordinator, was hired by the San Diego Padres to be the team's farm director earlier this off-season.
Nunez Gaining Notice in Venezuela
Oakland A's third base prospect Renato Nunez received plenty of attention from MLB prospect watchers in the US this season with his play for the High-A Stockton Ports. Nunez hit 29 homeruns and 96 RBI. Now Nunez is opening eyes in his native Venezuela.
In his rookie season in the Venezuelan Winter League, Nunez has made a significant impact on the Tigres de Aragua. He has homered four times in 21 games and has 19 RBI. Several articles from media outlets in Venezuela have named Nunez one of the most promising newcomers in the VWL this season.
