Revised Oakland A's Top-10 Prospects Ranking

Learn more about the Oakland A's current top-10 prospects.

Ranking the top prospects in the Oakland A’s system is an annual, off-season event at OaklandClubhouse. We rarely change those off-season rankings during a season because it is often unfair to judge a player before a full season of action.

Nonetheless, we are breaking our rules a bit to release our current top-10 Oakland A’s prospects. With the 2015 MLB Draft recently completed and an influx of new talent added to the A’s system via three July deadline deals, we thought it would be a good time to revisit our top-10 prospect ranking. We will, of course, release a full top-50 prospect ranking (with complete scouting reports) for the A’s system this November. Naturally, we reserve the right to change these rankings after the A’s fall Instructional League and the Arizona Fall League seasons are complete. Oakland A’s top-10 Prospects, as of August 4, 2015

#1) Franklin Barreto, SS

Barreto’s season could be done, as the Stockton Ports’ shortstop landed on the disabled list on July 26 with a deep bone bruise in his left wrist that will require at least three weeks of inactivity. Given that the season ends in four weeks, Barreto may not have enough time to get back on the field. Even if he doesn’t play another regular season inning this year, he has done plenty to earn the top spot in the A’s system. The 19-year-old is arguably the best pure hitter the A’s have had in their system in several years. He has an innate ability to barrel the ball and has a surprising amount of power for a player of his size (5’9’’). Barreto doesn’t walk a lot, but he has a sophisticated approach when he is up at the plate that belies his age. He also has above-average speed and an advanced feel for base-running. Defensively, he has work to do to stick at shortstop, but there are enough tools there that it is possible he sticks at the position long-term. If not, he will have plenty of offense to be an asset at second base, third base or centerfield.

#2) Matt Olson, 1B/RF

It hasn’t always been easy for Olson in the Texas League this season, but two down months aren’t going to impact the overall assessment of Olson as a prospect. Olson began the season red-hot, cooled in May and June, but has been his power-hitting self in July and early August. The sweet-swinging lefty has one of the best eyes in all of minor league baseball and legitimate 30-homer power. Defensively, Olson is already an asset at first base, but he has added the versatility of being able to play right field this season. That added versatility should ease his path to the big leagues. Olson has a lot in common with former A’s prospect and current Houston Astros’ slugger Chris Carter, but Olson is a better overall athlete with more patience at the plate and he brings a lot more value with the glove. Olson doesn’t turn 22 until next March and he is on target to reach the big leagues before his 23rd birthday.

#3) Sean Manaea, LHP

Acquired in the Ben Zobrist deal last week from the Kansas City Royals, Manaea joins the A’s organization as its top pitching prospect. The tall left-hander has a spotty injury history, but when healthy, he has the potential to be an impact, top-of-the-rotation starter in the big leagues. With his 6’5’’ frame, three-quarters delivery and 93-97 MPH fastball, Manaea has drawn comparisons to a young C.C. Sabathia. His secondary offerings still need work, but his slider, in particular, has flashed plus at times. His change-up has also been a decent pitch, at times, and that is a pitch that will get plenty of focus from the A’s minor league coaching staff. Depending on how many more innings he throws this year, Manaea could be a factor for the A’s as soon as mid-season 2016.

#4) Matt Chapman, 3B

Injuries are the only things that have slowed Chapman down during his first full professional season. The A’s 2014 first-round pick missed the first five weeks of the season recovering from a spring training knee injury and he was scratched last night with a left wrist injury that will be re-assessed in the coming days. Between those injuries, however, Chapman showed everyone why the A’s were so high on him coming out of Cal-State, Fullerton. Playing at the High-A level, the 22-year-old has showed impressive power to all fields. He has some swing-and-miss to his game, but he improved his walk rate and his BABIP as the season progressed. Defensively, Chapman has the tools to be a special player at third base. He has quick feet, soft hands and above-average instincts at the hot corner, as well as one of the best arms in the A’s system. Chapman has been asked to make several adjustments since turning pro and he has done well with those changes, a trait that bodes well for him in the future as he progresses.

#5) Jacob Nottingham, C

Acquired in the Scott Kazmir deal with the Houston Astros, Nottingham is one of those rare prospects who has a chance to be an above-average offensive catcher who can also handle the defensive aspects of the position. The 20-year-old emerged as a top-tier prospect this season in the Astros’ chain, going from Low-A to High-A and showing an aggressive approach at the plate that produced hard contact consistently this season. Nottingham’s approach at the plate reminds some of former A’s star Josh Donaldson at a similar stage in Donaldson’s career. Defensively, Nottingham isn’t a finished product behind the plate, but he has shown the ability to move his feet, make strong throws and block balls in the dirt. Nottingham is likely at least two full seasons away from the big leagues, but the A’s are in a good position at catcher in the big leagues, so they won’t rush him.

#6) Richie Martin, SS

Martin was the A’s top pick in this year’s draft. The University of Florida alum signed soon after the Gators finished their run deep into the NCAA post-season. The youngest four-year college player in the draft, Martin showed significant improvement at the plate this season. A potential number two hitter in the big leagues, Martin offers a solid approach at the plate to go along with a line-drive swing and above-average speed. He currently has gap-to-gap power, but he could develop homerun power down-the-road. Defensively, Martin has the tools to be an asset with the glove at short.

#7) Chad Pinder, SS

Overlooked on last year’s prospect-laden Stockton Ports’ squad, Pinder has separated himself this season with an outstanding all-around year at the Double-A level. The A’s 2013 Compensation Round pick made a seamless transition from second base to shortstop and also made significant improvements at the plate. After working all off-season on his approach, Pinder has cut-down his strike-out rate and increased his walk-rate in a tougher league to hit in. Pinder uses the whole field well and can hit in a variety of spots in the line-up. He is only an average runner, but he is a good athlete. Pinder has now shown he can handle both second base and shortstop in the pros and many scouts still think his best defensive position is third base, a position he played extensively in college. Given the A’s lack of upper-level/big league depth in the middle infield, the 23-year-old should get some time in big league camp with the A’s next spring.

#8) Renato Nunez, 3B/1B

Like Chapman, Nunez missed the first five weeks of the season with a lower body injury sustained during spring training. Since returning to live action, Nunez has shown impressive power in the Texas League, as well as an improved approach at the plate. The right-handed hitting Nunez can go against Chapman and Olson for the most pure power in the A’s system. Nunez’s power numbers have dipped some in the Texas League, but he is still one of the top power hitters in the Texas League. Nunez gets most of his power to the pull-side, but he can go the other way when looking for a base-hit. He has improved his K-rate considerably this season while also slightly increasing his walk-rate. Nunez’s batting average has suffered from some bad luck on balls in play. Defensively, he is still looking for a permanent home. He has gotten his feet wet at first base this season while continuing to get work in at third. In the future, the A’s may also try Nunez in left field as they search for the best spot for his glove. In any case, it will be the bat that carries the 21-year-old.

#9) Dillon Overton, LHP

Two years after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Overton is still being handled carefully by the A’s. Limited to five innings a start, Overton has thrown nearly 100 innings and is likely to finish the season with roughly 115-120 innings pitched. The results have been encouraging. He has been healthy all season and has held his own while making the jump from short-season to High-A to start the year and from High-A to Double-A after the All-Star break. Overton’s secondary pitches have been excellent all season and he is starting to see his velocity rebound. He began the year throwing mostly in the mid-80s, but in his last few starts, he is starting to see some 90s and 91s on the radar gun. Without his best fastball, Overton has still been effective at missing bats. He has shown excellent command all season and he has an advanced feel for pitch sequencing. His change-up is a plus pitch and his curveball is solid, as well. Overton is also arguably the fiercest competitor among A’s minor league pitching prospects. He should be a solid backend starter, at the very least, but if his velocity continues to climb back to his pre-injury levels, he could be a future two or three starter.

#10) Yairo Munoz, SS

Munoz landing at this spot may surprise some, but, while the numbers aren’t pretty this season, that doesn’t change the fact that Munoz has one of the highest ceilings of any player in the A’s system. The 20-year-old began his first year of full-season baseball in the Low-A Midwest League. He got off to a solid start and made the Midwest League’s mid-season All-Star team, but a horrific slump in June dropped his numbers considerably. He recovered in July and then got an opportunity in High-A when Barreto landed on the DL. Since arriving in the hitter-friendly Cal League, the numbers have improved considerably. Munoz has plenty of work to do to polish his game, but he has the tools to be a special player. He has above-average power for a shortstop, as well as the speed to be a threat on the bases. Munoz doesn’t walk much, but he isn’t a wild swinger, either. His K-rate is very solid for a young player. Munoz had bad luck with balls in play during his time in the Midwest League. Defensively, Munoz is still prone to concentration lapses – like many young players – but he has all of the elements to be a good defensive shortstop: quick feet, soft hands, athleticism and a strong arm. He has demonstrated an ability to play up to his level of competition, holding his own with Double-A and Triple-A players this spring, and could be one of those prospects whose numbers improve as he moves up.
