With Oakland A's starting catcher Stephen Vogt expected to be limited in the early days of spring training, the A's needed to add another catcher to their major league spring training non-roster list. They extended that invitation this week, adding prospect Beau Taylor to the big league spring mix.
Taylor is one of the best defensive catchers in the A's system. The A's 2011 fifth-round pick threw out 47% of would-be base-stealers last season. He has a career caught-stealing percentage of 30% and is well-regarded for his ability to call games. Taylor split his 2015 season between High-A Stockton and Double-A Midland. He hit only .214 with Stockton in 68 games, but Taylor was a big part of the RockHounds' late-season surge. He hit .259/.333/.397 in 17 late-season games and then had four hits and three walks in four post-season games. Taylor has been a part of both of the RockHounds' back-to-back Texas League title games.
