The Oakland A's released minor league right-hander Sam Roberts on Tuesday, bringing the total to seven released from minor league camp this week.
Roberts let go
The Oakland A's released right-hander Sam Roberts on Tuesday, according to A's Director of Player Development Keith Lieppman. Roberts was the A's 26th-round pick in 2011 out of the Virginia Military Institute. A two-way player in college, Roberts began his pro career as an infielder. He reached Low-A as a position player before transitioning to the mound full-time midway through the 2014 season with the Beloit Snappers. He appeared in 26 games with the Snappers as a reliever in 2014 and had a 2.50 ERA in 39.2 innings.
In 2015, Roberts was an important member of a strong Stockton Ports' bullpen that helped lead the Ports to the California League post-season. He appeared in 43 games and had a 3.65 ERA in 69 innings. Roberts had a 50% groundball rate and he allowed just five homeruns in the hitter-friendly league.
Roberts is the seventh player to be released from A's minor league camp this week.
