Oakland A's MLN: Lee Sosa released

News and notes from around the Oakland A's minor leagues on the last weekend before Opening Day.

Sosa released

The Oakland A's released hard-throwing right-hander Lee Sosa over the weekend. Sosa was a 26th-round pick in the 2012 draft out of SUNY-Binghamton. Sosa has an electric fastball but he struggled with his command during his four years in the A's organization. In 145.2 career innings, Sosa had a 5.13 ERA. He struck-out 119 and walked 91. Sosa reached as high as Low-A Beloit with the A's.

Sosa spent the 2015 season between Beloit and Vermont. He had a 6.82 ERA in 31.2 innings. Sosa is the ninth player released from A's camp thus far this spring. Seth Frankoff, who was released by the A's earlier in the week, announced on Twitter on Saturday that he had signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Beloit roster set

The Beloit Snappers announced their Opening Day roster on Saturday. To view the entire roster, click here. The roster is highlighted by several members of the A's 2015 draft class, including fourth-round pick Skye Bolt.

A's 2015 top pick Richie Martin was a candidate to start the year in Beloit, but he will miss the first two months of the season with a knee injury that he suffered in camp this week. Outfielder James Terrell will also miss the start of the season after injuring his hamate bone. He had surgery and will be out at least six weeks. Terrell was likely to start the season with short-season Vermont regardless.

Other news and notes

Matt Chapman made a splash in his debut at the Oakland Coliseum, homering off the skyboxes in centerfield in the A's 4-1 over the San Francisco Giants in game three of the Bay Bridge Series. Chapman, who will start the year in Double-A, homered six times during big league camp.

- Catcher Bruce Maxwell had a big spring training and he will be heading to Triple-A Nashville to start the year.

- Outfielder Joe Bennie and infielder Max Kuhn are moving up from Low-A Beloit to High-A Stockton.

- Reliever Sam Bragg is moving up from High-A Stockton to Double-A Midland.
