This July, the Oakland A's traded veterans Josh Reddick and Rich Hill for a trio of top pitching prospects from the Los Angeles Dodgers. One of those prospects, Jharel Cotton, has already made an impressive debut at the major league level. Frankie Montas -- sidelined by a rib injury -- will make his much anticipated Oakland A's organizational debut this fall at the Arizona Fall League.
The third prospect in the deal, Grant Holmes, is the furthest from the big leagues but arguably has the highest ceiling.
Holmes made his A's organizational debut in August with the High-A Stockton Ports. He got off to a shaky start with Stockton but allowed six earned runs over his final three starts (14.2 innings). The 20-year-old spent the entire year in the California League, pitching for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes before joining Stockton after the trade. He finished his 2016 season with 124 strike-outs in 134 California League innings.
He will enter the 2017 season as one of the A's top-five prospects.
