Game Preview: June 2, 2004, A's vs. White Sox

David Levie breaks down the match-up between left-handed aces Mark Mulder and Mark Buehrle in the second game of the two-game series between the A's and White Sox.

Chicago White Sox (29-21) vs. Oakland Athletics (27-23)

Date: Wednesday, June 02, 2004
First Pitch: 12:35 P.S.T.

Preview: The A's look for the sweep this afternoon as they play the White Sox to finish off a quick two game series. Make sure you go to the bathroom before the game as two of the hottest pitchers in baseball square off for the first time this year after all three of their matchups last year didn't last longer than 1 hour and 54 minutes. The A's are hoping that Mark Mulder can go deep into the game to help Oakland forget about their recent bullpen struggles and the major injury suffered by Gold-Glove third baseman Eric Chavez last night. Mulder will be facing stiff competition as the White Sox counter with the red-hot Mark Buehrle who is 4-0 in his last 4 outings while only yielding 2 earned runs.

Pitching Matchup:
White Sox - Mark Buehrle (5-1, 3.45 ERA)
Athletics - Mark Mulder (6-2, 3.00 ERA)

Comments: Buehrle is 3-0 in his last 3 starts with a 0.87 ERA and pitched 7 shutout innings for the win against Texas in his last outing... Mulder is also 3-0 in his last 3 start with a 1.14 ERA although he walked 7 batters in just 5 2/3 innings in his last start at Boston... Mulder and Buehrle faced each 3 times last year with each game lasting less than 2 hours as Mulder won 2 of the 3 contests... Lifetime against Oakland, Buehrle has an ERA of 3.64 but has consistently been outdueled resulting in a 2-5 record... On the other hand, Mulder has been impressive over his career against Chicago with a 4-1 record and a 2.31 ERA...
