Anaheim Angels (41-34) L-1 v. Oakland Athletics (41-33) L-1
Date: June 29, 2004
Time: 7:05 P.S.T.
Place: Network Associates Coliseum – Oakland, CA
Preview: The A's got a much needed day off on Monday as they get ready to take on the Anaheim Angels for the fifth time in eight games. After the two teams split a four-game series last week, they find themselves close in the standings again as the Angels trail Oakland by only a half game. For the A's, playing Anaheim is a continuation of the recent pattern of quality teams that the A's have had to go up against in the last few weeks. With seemingly no time to take a breath until the All-Star break, the A's will have to go on the road to play the Giants (1st place – NL West), the Red Sox (2nd place – AL East), and the Indians (swept Oakland earlier in the season) after playing the Angels.
The A's are 3-4 in their last seven games and 4-9 in their last thirteen. Too make matters worse, Oakland placed star pitcher Tim Hudson on the 15-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, Rich Harden is working through a shoulder injury, Bobby Kielty was scratched from Sunday's lineup with a ribcage injury, and Billy McMillon suffered a minor setback on his attempt to return from a lower back injury. The A's will find no sympathy from the visiting Angels as they have seen their fair share of injuries this year, but Anaheim has had several key players return from the disabled list lately - Garrett Anderson, Darin Erstad, Tim Salmon, and Brendan Donnelly to name a few. The Angels lead the season series so far this year 6-4 and are 3-0 in Oakland.
Anaheim – John Lackey, RHP (5-8, 5.16 ERA)
Oakland – Mark Mulder, LHP (9-2, 2.76 ERA)
John Lackey: Lackey's last start was also against the A's and he continued his lifetime success against Oakland by pitching eight strong innings in a 10-3 win by giving up two runs on seven hits and walking none. In six career starts against the A's, Lackey is 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA but has averaged only 5.2 innings per start. Lackey has struggled away from Anaheim this year as he is only 2-4 with a 7.71 ERA in eight games while allowing eight homeruns.
Mark Mulder: Mulder is coming off a brilliant performance against Anaheim where he went the complete nine innings to lead the A's to a 2-1 victory. He is looking for his career-best eighth consecutive winning decision as he has not suffered a loss in his last ten starts. Mulder is 4-5 lifetime against Anaheim with a 3.31 ERA and has averaged a little over seven innings in 12 career starts. Mulder is a perfect 5-0 at home this year in eight starts with a 2.98 ERA.
