Minor League Team Spotlight: Midland RockHounds

Midland made up Tuesday's rainout with a doubleheader on Wednesday, splitting the two games with the Wichita Wranglers.

Midland's doubleheader with Wichita on Wednesday produced mixed results, as they won the opener and then were blown out in the second game.

In the first game, Midland won the game 5-3 on the strength of Brian Sellier's three hits and three RBIs. Shortstop John McCurdy -- who has been a disappointment since he was drafted in the first round of the "Moneyball draft" of 2002 -- had a solid game, going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. McCurdy has 22 XBHs on the season, but he is still hitting only .246 with a horrible .268 OBP. Reliever Steve Smyth picked up the win for the RockHounds and Marcus Gwyn notched his 8th save. The victory broke the RockHounds' 4 game losing streak.

A new losing streak began for the RockHounds in the second game, as they dropped the nightcap 8-0. They were no-hit through 6.1 innings. Starter Jimmy Serrano of Wichita threw six innings of no-hit ball, but was relieved by Mike Natale in the seventh. Natale lost the no-hitter when catcher John Baker hit a single.

Starter Shane Komine continued his season-long pattern of alternating good starts and bad starts, as he took the loss when he gave up six runs in only four innings of work. Komine's record fell to 4-5 and his ERA is now up to 4.68.
