Dan Johnson wins PCL MVP award

The Sacramento River Cats are on the verge of clinching yet another division title and the accolades for their stellar season are starting to come in. Former 2002 7th round draft pick Dan Johnson won the PCL MVP award in his first season in the league.

Dan Johnson was drafted by the A's out of the University of Nebraska during the 2002 "Moneyball" draft. Although he was a seventh round pick, Johnson has done nothing but impress since joining the A's organization.

Johnson becomes the third River Cat to win the PCL MVP award over the past five years. The previous winners were Jose Ortiz in 2000 and Graham Koonce last season. Johnson has hit an impressive .305 with 12 HR with runners in scoring position this season. He leads the River Cats in RBIs with 108 and is second to the newly promoted Nick Swisher in HR and BB.

Johnson has primarily played firstbase this season, although he has spent some time in left, as well. Johnson will have a chance to win a roster spot with the A's next season. For more information on his chances to make the team, please click here.

Look for Johnson to make his major league debut in Oakland as a September call-up after the River Cats finish their playoff run.
