The Caracas Leones are representing host Venezuela and they have been the Caribbean Series' best team thus far. They are 5-0 in the Caribbean Series and could clinch the Caribbean Series title with a win over the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. The Leones won the Venezuelan Winter League title, with A's second baseman Marco Scutaro as one of the headliner players on the team. Scutaro hit .336 during the winter league regular season and .368 during the final Venezuelan Winter League championship series. A's farmhands Javier Herrera and Gregorio Petit were also members of the Leones during the winter league season.
Scutaro launched a grand slam homerun in the Caribbean Series' second game. Scutaro is hitting an even .300 with that grand slam and five RBI in five games during the Caribbean Series.
Javier Herrera has been a surprise contributor to the Leones this Caribbean Series. Expected to be a back-up, Herrera was thrust into the starter's role thanks to an injury. The A's prospect has been a solid offensive force for the Leones. Herrera is hitting .312 in the Caribbean Series. This was Herrera's first full season in the winter leagues and he hit .275 with 11 stolen bases in 54 games for the Leones during the regular Venezuelan Winter League season.
Juan Cruz is the lone member of the A's organization playing for the Dominican team, the Licey Tigers. Cruz pitched in the Series opener for Licey, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of work. He has been undefeated for the Tigers in post-season play, which includes the Round Robin and Final Dominican Winter League series. The Tigers are 4-1 in the Caribbean Series, their one loss coming to first place Venezuela. The Tigers and Leones will square off on Tuesday.
