Minor League Photobook: Camp Pics

The Oakland A's minor league camp is underway and more than 100 players are hard at work at the A's complex at Papago Park. We were in Phoenix this past weekend and captured come of that camp on film. Look inside for a snapshot of minor league camp... All photos by Chris Lockard.

Daric Barton looks on as Ronnie Merrill circles the bases in a base-running drill at Papago Park on Saturday. Both Merrill and Barton are working with the AAA squad right now. Merrill was picked up in the minor league portion of the Rule V draft this off-season. The minor league veteran is a defensive wizard at shortstop and he was in the San Diego organization last season.

Brant Colamarino and Kevin Melillo chat before AAA batting practice on Saturday. Colamarino and Melillo are two of the best power hitters in the A's system.

Hard-throwing right-hander Craig Italiano readies himself for action during a fielding drill with the low-A Kane County squad at practice on Saturday.

Third baseman Brian Snyder gets ready to field a groundball during fielding practice with the AA squad on Saturday. Snyder is looking to rebound from an injury-filled 2005.

Second baseman Gregorio Petit smiles during fielding practice with high-A Stockton on Friday. Petit is coming off of a productive 2005 season with Kane County. He is known for his baseball smarts and his gregarious nature.

Outfielder Danny Putnam had an outstanding season with the high-A Stockton Ports in 2005 and he seems poised for big things in 2006. He played well in big league camp and was praised for his approach to hitting and his intelligence on the field.

Right-fielder Richie Robnett is having a standout spring so far with the AA-Midland squad. Robnett has wowed coaches with his throwing arm and power at the plate. The five-tool player hit 20 homers for Stockton last season.

Outfielder Javier Herrera is another bright spot in A's camp. The five-tool prospect impressed coaches in camp with his improved plate discipline and his range in center.

Corner infielder Vasili Spanos gets set to take grounders at first during AA fielding practice on Friday. Spanos can play both first and third base.

Outfielders Steve Stanley and Danny Putnam get ready for base-running drills on Saturday. Stanley is making a strong push to play for AAA-Sacramento next season after spending 2005 in Midland, his third straight year spent in AA.
