Major League Photobook: Camp Pics
He may have a new name and a different age, but the fastball and the wicked slider are the same for Santiago Casilla. Casilla struggled in his appearance on Saturday versus Kansas City, but he has otherwise shown improved control and poise on the mound this spring.
Many pundits weren't sure how Milton Bradley would fit into the A's clubhouse. However, thus far the match has been a good one, as Bradley has been a very happy camper this spring. The versatile and talented outfielder has not shown any ill-effects from the knee surgery that ended his 2005 season prematurely.
Kirk Saarloos has been demoted to the bullpen despite a strong season as the A's fifth starter. The Fullerton grad has taken well to his new role and he has been impressive this spring.
Closer Huston Street arrived back in camp on Saturday after spending much of the spring with Team USA at the WBC, where he threw two scoreless innings. Street appeared in the A's Sunday win over the Cubs. Street retired the side in order with a strikeout.
Eric Chavez can't believe his first inning drive versus the Royals on Saturday didn't leave the park. Chavez would be credited with a run-scoring double on the play. He would homer later in the game. Chavez has been red-hot this spring.
First baseman Dan Johnson has been hard at work on his opposite field swing this spring. He hit a number of balls the other way this past weekend.
Centerfielder Charles Thomas might be struggling at the plate, but he has been flashing the leather this spring. Thomas made three outstanding plays on Friday, including throwing out a runner at home. He followed that up with a great running catch on Sunday versus the Cubs. Thomas was getting a lot of work in center with Mark Kotsay nursing a sore back.
