The Oakland A's added two more pitchers to their depleted farm system on Tuesday, inking right-hander Joel Posey and left-hander Heath Castle out of the independent Frontier League. Both players were on the Florence Freedom, which is the same team former A's prospect Eddie Kim is playing on this season.
Posey is a Frontier League veteran who was an All-Star in 2005 when he went 8-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 20 games for the Freedom. He struck out 144 in 132 innings. Posey played with the Freedom in 2004 and 2005. Castle is a former Yankees' farmhand who was with the New York organization through the 2005 season. The former 2003 draft pick out of the University of Kentucky appeared in 43 games for the Yankees affiliates last season, splitting time between A-Tampa and A-Charleston. He was released by the Yankees on April 2. The big left-hander has a career 4.33 ERA in 98 minor league appearances. He has never pitched above high-A ball.
Both Posey and Castle will be sent to A-Stockton to begin their seasons.
The A's also learned on Tuesday that they had lost right-hander Chris Mabeus on waivers to the Milwaukee Brewers. Mabeus had been removed from the A's 40-man roster to make room for Randy Keisler over the weekend. Mabeus was added to the Brewers' 40-man roster and assigned to AAA-Nashville. He has been one of the stalwarts of the River Cats' bullpen since midway through the 2004 season. The Lewis-Clark State alumnus was drafted in the 13th round of the 2001 draft by Oakland and had spent his entire career with the A's organization, save spring training 2004 when he was with the Texas Rangers as a Rule 5 selection.
The River Cats lost another reliever, at least temporarily, on Tuesday, as Matt Roney was recalled to Oakland for the second time in 10 days to replace Randy Keisler, who was put on the bereavement list. The A's also officially added the newly re-acquired Steve Karsay to the 25-man roster. Karsay replaces Jeremy Brown on the roster. Brown did not appear in a game during his week-long stay with Oakland.
