Oakland A's MLN: Week In Review 7/17-7/23

Sacramento River Cats
Season Record: 52-50
Notable Performances for the Week of 7/17-7/23:

Dan Johnson:12-25, 8 R, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 7 BB, 3 K. Johnson has been red-hot since being demoted to AAA to work on his swing. Johnson is hitting .485 with 11 RBI in 9 games for the River Cats.

Jason Perry: 9-25, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 5 K. Perry has slumped in July after a red-hot June, but he picked up the pace a bit this week. His homer was his sixth at AAA and his 10th of the season.

Doug Clark: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 SB. Clark returned to the River Cats' roster on Sunday after being designated for assignment when Jason Windsor was placed on the 40-man roster last weekend. Clark cleared waivers and elected to return to Sacramento, where he is having a strong season, batting .286 with six homers and 21 stolen bases.

Shane Komine: 1 GS, 1 W, 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Komine allowed a run for the first time in three starts, but he still earned his fifth straight win. The right-hander has lowered his ERA to 4.17 and he has an 8-7 record for the River Cats. Komine has struck out 92 in 112.1 innings.

Adam Pettyjohn: 2 GS, 11.1 IP, 14 H, 9 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Pettyjohn returned to the River Cats last week after a year and a half absence. He finished the 2004 season on the Sacramento roster and then was in Independent baseball in 2005. Pettyjohn pitched for Seattle's AA club through early June, but was released and returned to Independent baseball. He re-signed with Oakland as a free agent last week. His first start was a poor one (seven runs in 4.2 innings), but he rebounded with an excellent one on Sunday (2 R in 6.2 innings).

Midland Rockhounds
Second Half Record: 16-13
Notable Performances for the Week of 7/17-7/23:

Matt Allegra: 7-23, 7 R, 1 3B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K. Allegra went on a power binge this week and is now in the team-lead for homeruns with 13. He has six in 73 July at-bats and has walked 11 times in 20 games.

Brant Colamarino: 7-23, 3 R, 3 2B, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K. Colamarino has driven-in an incredible 21 runs in 21 games in July. He has 65 on the year and 40 since June 1.

Mark Kiger: 8-26, 4 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 SB. Kiger has taken his demotion to AA well and has played well for Midland. He has been at third base for the last two weeks and he has a six-game hitting streak.

Brad Knox: 2 GS, 2 W, 12.2 IP, 14 H, 4 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 6 K. Knox's second start of the week wasn't as good as his previous four but it was good enough to extend his winning streak to five. Knox is now 9-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 114.2 innings for Midland this season.

David Bradley: 1 GS, 1 W, 6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K. Bradley won his second straight start this week, improving his record to 6-8 and dropping his ERA to 4.39. Bradley has a 2.92 ERA in four July starts.

Connor Robertson: 3 G, 4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Robertson's outstanding season in the Rockhounds bullpen continued this week. Robertson has a 3.08 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 61.1 innings pitched. He has yet to allow a homer and has walked only 16.

Marcus McBeth: 3 G, 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 3 SV. McBeth now has 12 saves for Midland and 19 on the year. He has his AA ERA back below 3.00 at 2.97 and he is limiting Texas League batters to a .203 BAA.

Stockton Ports
Second Half Record: 15-14
Notable Performances for the Week of 7/17-7/23:

Myron Leslie: 10-27, 8 R, 3 2B, 7 RBI, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 SB. Leslie has 71 RBI this season, which leads the team. Since June 1, he has 10 homers and 43 RBI.

Eddie Cornejo: 14-26, 7 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 SB. Cornejo has been on-fire since July 8. Since that date, he has raised his High-A average from .192 to .407. He has driven-in 11 runs and he has a 15:9 BB:K ratio since re-joining the Ports on July 1.

Gregorio Petit: 7-24, 3 R, 2 3B, 3 RBI, 3 K, 1 SB. Petit has his average back above .250 at .251. He has been playing at SS since July 5. His stolen base was his 18th of the season.

John McCurdy: 5-19, 3 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 8 K. McCurdy extended hit streak to eight games this week.

Scot Drucker: 2 G, 4 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 SV. Drucker has taken well to his new bullpen role. In July, he has made eight relief appearances and he has a 1.26 ERA in 14.1 innings pitched. He has saved two games this month and has 11 strikeouts and only one walk for the month.

Kenneth Durost: 1 GS, 1 W, 6.1 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K. Durost returned the Ports' rotation after a week stint in the bullpen. He is 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA since joining the Ports on July 2.

Kane County Cougars
Second Half Record: 19-11
Notable Performances for the Week of 7/17-7/23:

Toddric Johnson: 7-18, 7 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 3 K. Johnson broke a two-week slump this week. He was on-base at least once in each of the five games he played in and scored twice in three of those games. The speedster has his low-A batting average back up to .259 after having watched it go as low as .192.

Chad Boyd: 10-28, 5 R, 1 2B, 7 RBI, 4 K. Boyd has a 13-game hitting streak and is batting .346 since joining the Cougars on June 25. The spunky outfielder only has one homerun in 107 at-bats, but he has 12 doubles.

Steve Kleen: 10-24, 2 R, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 SB. Kleen extended his hitting streak to a season-high 16 games this week. The first baseman has raised his batting average from .276 to .292.

Justin Sellers: 6-22, 6 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 5 BB, 3 K. After a tough start to the month of July, Sellers has picked it up at the plate. He has raised his average from .245 to .253 and he has scored 10 runs over his last eight games.

Jose Pineda: 6-23, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 4 BB, 7 K. Pineda has 57 RBI in 94 games for the Cougars.

Ben Jukich: 2 GS, 2 W, 10 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 1 HR, 3 BB, 11 K. Jukich was inserted into the Cougars starting rotation this week as an injury replacement for Ron Madej, but he may have pitched his way into the rotation for good. The crafty lefty has pitched extremely well since arriving at low-A. The 2006 draft pick has struck out 18 in 18 innings and is 3-0.

Jared Lansford: 1 GS, 1 W, 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K. Lansford has been pitching much better in July after a very rough June. He has a 3-0 record in four starts with a 1.08 ERA in 25 innings. Lansford has improved his K:BB ratio this month, as well, with a 12:8 ratio.

Vancouver Canadians
Season Record: 22-12
Notable Performances for the Week of 7/17-7/23:

Matt Sulentic: 12-26, 3 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 6 BB, 3 K, 1 SB. Sulentic's plate patience has improved and his red-hot hitting has not suffered as a result. The 18 year-old outfielder is batting .366 on the year and has a 11:14 BB:K ratio in July after posting a 0:7 BB:K ratio in June.

Larry Cobb: 11-29, 9 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 SB. Cobb bumped his average above .300 with a solid week at the plate. He is now at .307. The lead-off hitter has scored 24 runs in 29 games for Vancouver.

Don Sutton: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB. Sutton's season has been interrupted by injuries, but he has homered in each of the last two games he has played in. The slugging right-hander has three homers in 50 at-bats and an impressive 13:14 BB:K ratio.

Mike Affronti: 9-25, 9 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 K, 2 SB. After a fast start at the plate, Affronti's bat had slowed until this week's hot streak. The homer was his first of the season.

Scott Deal: 2 GS, 2 W, 12 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K. Deal has been the ace of the Canadians' rotation since the start of the season and that continued this week. He is 6-0 in seven starts with a 1.38 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 39 innings. Deal has walked only nine and has yet to allow a homerun.

Andrew Bailey: 1 GS, 4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. The A's sixth round pick moved into the Canadians' rotation this week and was outstanding. He was perfect through three innings and only a pitch count kept him from picking up his first professional win. Bailey has thrown 12 innings since joining Vancouver and has struck out 11 while walking none.

Arizona Athletics
Season Record: 10-16
Notable Performances for the Week of 7/17-7/23:

Lorenzo Macias: 4-15, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB. Macias is hitting .293 with nine extra-base hits and seven stolen bases in 24 games.

Marcos Luis: 4-22, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 4 K. The 20-year old second baseman is batting .292 with 11 RBI in 20 games.

Francisco Pena: 2 G, 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K. Pena has pitched well since being sent down to the Arizona Rookie League from short-season Vancouver. He has held Rookie League batters to a .143 BAA and has a 2.70 ERA in 20 innings. The only blemish on his record is his 10 walks.
