Powell Promoted to Midland

Catcher Landon Powell has been promoted to Double-A Midland from Class High-A Stockton, a Ports official said Friday.

The 24-year-old Powell was hitting .264 in 90 games with the Ports, his first season back from a knee injury that sidelined him all throughout 2005.

Powell's 15 home runs with the Ports trailed only Myron Leslie's total of 17. He drove in 47 runs, and drew 43 walks – also second to only Leslie.

With the Ports, Powell hit .290 against right-handed pitching, but just .200 against lefties. Behind the plate, he led the California League in fielding percentage among catchers with a .994 clip. He committed four errors and 11 passed balls.

In addition, Powell threw out 52 percent of base-runners (50 of 97) in 82 games behind the plate.

Powell was the A's first-round pick in the 2004 draft out of South Carolina in the SEC. He was selected the previous year by the Cubs in the 25th round.
