Arizona A's Finish with a Bang

A's first-round draft pick Trevor Cahill started a combined no-hitter in the Arizona Rookie League A's season finale on Wednesday, defeating the Cubs in Phoenix, 5-0.

Cahill made his fourth and final start with the team, throwing four perfect innings. He struck out seven of the minimum 12 batters he faced. It was Cahill's longest outing with the team since his professional debut earlier this month.

Henry Rodriguez, a 19-year-old right-hander, threw five innings in relief of Cahill and allowed two walks for the only Cubs runners to reach base. Rodriguez entered the night with a plus-eight ERA in 14 appearances, but finished with five wins for the team, who closed out the second half 14-13, five games back of the first place Angels.

The A's went 10-18 in the first half, tied for last place with the Cubs.

Five different players drove in a run Wednesday, including OF Carlos Morales who hit his fourth home run. The A's finished with the lowest batting average of any team in the league with a combined .237 mark.

In spite of the no-hitter, the A's pitching staff also placed near the bottom of the league with a combined 5.25 staff ERA. They had the most strikeouts of any of the nine teams with 475.
