Mitchell and McBeth Shine In Showcase

A's relief prospects Mike Mitchell and Marcus McBeth each threw scoreless innings in the East team's 3-1 victory in the inaugural Rising Stars Showcase. Mitchell earned the win with a scoreless sixth inning. The sinkerballer induced three harmless ground-outs in his perfect inning.

A's closer prospect Marcus McBeth was called on by East and Sacramento River Cats' manager Tony DeFrancesco to close out the win and he did so in emphatic fashion. McBeth worked a scoreless ninth. He worked around a fielding error by Ryan Braun to strike out two and not allow a run.

A's outfield prospect Travis Buck earned the start as the DH, but he went 0-3 with two strike outs. A's catching prospect Landon Powell grounded out in his only at-bat. More than 2,000 people attended the game, which was played at Suprise Stadium.

A's Make Some Moves

Oakland has begun to prepare for next season by making some minor league moves. Six-year free agents Sam Walton (LHP), Luis Perez (OF) and Jose Pineda (OF) elected to re-sign with the team befor the October 15 deadline. Perez won the California League batting title this season.

Oakland also announced that they had released pitchers Dan Fyvie, Joel Posey and Randy Rapp.
