Hunter Ovens ponders baseball vs. football

You have two choices. Go play baseball in the San Diego Padres farm system or accept a football scholarship to Virginia Tech. Hunter Ovens faces that tough decision of deciding between the two.

Talk about being picked by the Padres, how much interest they showed you before the draft and the tough choice ahead since you have a college scholarship on your plate, which will clearly affect your decision on whether to sign with the Padres.

Hunter Ovens: Well, I talked to (scout Joe) Bochy, and he was really interested before the draft. I have two choices, but I really want to play baseball. But, they haven't offered me anything yet, so we will just have to wait and see.

After signing a letter of intent with Virginia Tech, can you talk about the difficulty of choosing between football and baseball?

Hunter Ovens: Well, I mean, it's a big choice. To play baseball would be good and everything, but getting a college scholarship is not always given out.

Can you talk about your game, at the plate and in the field?

Hunter Ovens: Well, when I'm in the field, I try to be solid on defense and just make all of the plays that I can. When I'm hitting, I just try and do whatever it is I can do to help the team.

Are you able to move around from position to position in the outfield or are you mainly a right fielder?

Hunter Ovens: Well actually, I played infield at four year in high school, and I played infield all my life.

When dissecting your game, do you feel there is an area you would call a weakness or something in your game that needs a little improvement?

Hunter Ovens: Probably just consistency when I am hitting.

What is your best baseball moment? What sticks out for you?

Hunter Ovens: Well, I went to the Final Four in baseball in the eighth grade.

Who was your favorite player growing up?

Hunter Ovens: I've always like Derek Jeter.

What is it about baseball that you love so much and if you do start your professional baseball career what do you forward to most?

Hunter Ovens: I don't know, just going out there everyday, and just playing baseball. (I look forward to) just going out and playing everyday, and doing what I can do to help the organization.
