A third inning David Maroul double was the only thing standing between Kevin Deaton and history on Tuesday evening. The right-hander threw a complete game, one-hitter versus the Stockton Ports' biggest rival, the San Jose Giants.
Deaton signed with the Oakland A's as a minor league free agent this off-season after spending his career in the New York Mets' chain. Deaton was injured after his first start of the season with the Midland Rockhounds and he missed the next 10 weeks. After a short stint with the A's Rookie League team, Deaton was sent to Stockton.
Coming into Tuesday night, Deaton had allowed five runs in 10.2 innings for the Ports in two starts and one relief appearance. He would almost equal his previous innings total on Tuesday night alone.
Facing the Giants in San Jose, Deaton was dominant. He allowed only a third inning double and a seventh inning walk. Deaton induced a double-play in the seventh inning and wound-up facing only one batter over the minimum. He struck out nine Giants.
The Ports gave Deaton early run support. Shortstop Justin Sellers blasted a third inning, three-run homerun, his fourth homerun of the season. Stockton would add a run in the sixth on a Chad Boyd RBI ground-out and that was all that Deaton would need.
Other Notes From Tuesday's Action:
* Henry Rodriguez struck out seven in five shut-out innings for Kane County in the Cougars' 9-1 win over Lansing. Eric Sheridan got the win and Andrew Carignan earned the save with two shut-out innings. He struck out five and walked one.
* Dan Meyer threw five shut-out innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth and finished his Tuesday outing by allowing two runs in 5.2 innings of work. Meyer struck out seven and walked one versus Oklahoma, but the RedHawks finished on top by a score of 7-3. Nick Blasi reached four times, on a hit and three walks, to lead the River Cats' offense.
* The Arizona A's were blasted by the Arizona Giants by a score of 14-1. Carlos Arrieche had a double, a walk and an RBI for the A's. He is batting .342 for the Rookie League A's.
* Corey Brown blasted his ninth homerun of the season and he drove-in three runs for Vancouver in their 5-3 win over Yakima. Brown went 2-4 with a walk. Matt Sulentic went 3-4 to extend his multi-hit game streak to four games. Justin Frash, Dante Love and Dusty Napoleon all had multi-hit games for the C's and Michael Richard scored twice and stole a base. The stolen base was his 20th of the season.
