The Oakland A's lost a player on waivers for the third time this off-season, as outfielder Chris Snelling was claimed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Snelling, who was acquired on May 3 for Ryan Langerhans, had been on the disabled list since May 17 and on the 60-day disabled list since June 29. Snelling has battled knee injuries throughout his career and he had surgery on his knee last season.
The talented outfielder appeared in only six games for Oakland after the trade from the Washington Nationals. He had seven hits in 20 at-bats with the A's (a .350 BA) and posted a .480 OBP. Snelling appeared in 24 games for the Nationals and hit .204 with one homer and a 688 OPS. He began his career with the Seattle Mariners, where he played in parts of three seasons from 2002-2006. He had 96 at-bats for the Mariners in 2006 (a career-high).
Connor Robertson was outrighted off of the 40-man roster and sent to Triple-A Sacramento. The right-handed reliever was added to the 40-man roster in mid-May when he was promoted to the big leagues. He appeared in three games for the A's, allowing four runs in two innings, before breaking his finger on a comebacker in a May 21st game against the Chicago White Sox. He was on the disabled list for almost two months.
Robertson made 31 appearances for Triple-A Sacramento this season, his first full season at Triple-A. He had a 4-1 record with two saves and a 4.35 ERA. He struck out 40 in 39.1 innings. He has struck out 11.96 batters per nine innings during his four year minor league career. Robertson will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft this fall, and if he is not taken, he is expected to be among the group of relievers who challenge for the final spot in the A's bullpen this spring.
