Kiko Calero, who was one of the A's top set-up men in 2005 and 2006, will be returning to Oakland for a fourth season after a one-day stint as a free agent. The right-hander, who was non-tendered on Wednesday, came to terms with the A's on a one-year deal on Thursday. The terms of the deal were not immediately announced.
Calero had a down year in 2007, as he was plagued by shoulder problems. He appeared in only 46 games after pitching in 70 games in 2006. Calero had a 5.75 ERA and allowed opposing batters to hit .293 against him in 2007.
In 2005 and 2006, Calero was one of the A's top relievers. He had a 3.23 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 55.2 innings in 2005, his first season with the club. In 2006, Calero had a 3.41 ERA and allowed batters to hit only .231 against him in 58 innings.
Calero was acquired by Oakland from the St. Louis Cardinals organization as part of the Mark Mulder-Dan Haren trade. He has appeared in 241 major league games during his career and has a 3.55 ERA. He appeared in the post-season in 2004 with St. Louis and in 2006 with Oakland.
Injuries have been a problem for Calero for much of his career. He suffered from a serious knee injury while with the Cardinals and has had elbow and shoulder problems with Oakland. When healthy, his slider is a very effective pitch, especially against right-handed hitters.
If Calero is healthy in 2008, he should be the A's top right-handed set-up man, especially if Justin Duchscherer is moved into the starting rotation.
