A's MLN: Saarloos Signs & Winter Updates

The Oakland A's announced that they had reached an agreement with a familiar name on Tuesday. We also have updates on the A's players participating in the winter leagues.

A's Bring Back Saarloos
After dropping many familiar names this off-season, the A's have brought one back into the fold. Pitcher Kirk Saarloos, who played for the A's in 2004-2006, was signed to a minor league contract for the 2008 season.

The right-hander was dealt to the Cincinnati Reds before the 2007 season. He struggled for the Reds, posting a 1-5 record with a 7.17 ERA in 42.2 innings. He made 34 appearances for the Reds, 31 in relief. He struck out 27, walked 18 and allowed eight homers.

Saarloos also spent some time with Triple-A Louisville last season. In 41 innings in 18 appearances (five starts), he had a 3.95 ERA. He struck out 28 and walked nine at the Triple-A level.

In three seasons with the A's, Saarloos won 19 games in 305.1 innings. He was a valuable fifth starter for the A's in 2005, when he won 10 games and threw 159.2 innings. Saarloos will be in the mix to compete for a spot either in the A's rotation or as the A's long reliever this spring.

Oakland A's Winter Update

Below is an update on the A's winter league participants, as the winter league season comes to a close.

Carlos Gonzalez: Gonzalez hasn't played for Zulia since he was traded to the A's in late December. In 43 games with the Aguilas this winter, he hit .262 with two homers and 15 RBIs.

Raul Padron: Despite testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs earlier this off-season, Padron has continued his winter schedule. He has appeared in 14 games for the Leones del Caracas since finishing his Arizona Fall League schedule. He hit .231 with three doubles in 13 at-bats for Caracas.

Gregorio Petit: After a break-through regular season, Petit has had a disappointing winter campaign for Caracas. The slick-fielding shortstop has hit .225 in 29 games this winter. He also committed an uncharacteristic nine errors in 25 games in the field.

Alex Valdez: The infielder, who spent the regular season with Kane County, has appeared in five games for the Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League. He has one hit in five at-bats.

Santiago Casilla: The A's hard-throwing reliever didn't start his winter season until late in the schedule. He pitched well in limited appearances, however, throwing six scoreless innings for Escogido. Casilla had one save and five strikeouts while allowing only one walk and two hits.

Troy Cate: The A's minor league free agent signing has appeared both in the Mexican and Dominican Winter Leagues. In eight innings between the two teams, Cate allowed 11 hits and five runs. He saved three games and struck out seven.

Dana Eveland: Like Gonzalez, Eveland hasn't appeared in a Winter League game since he was acquired by the A's. Eveland was outstanding for Aguilas de Mexicali, posting a 2.51 ERA in 61 innings. He had one complete game and struck out 69 in 14 appearances (nine starts).

Brad Knox: Knox made 11 starts for Caracas. He had a 4.24 ERA in 46.2 innings. He struck out 28, walked 21 and allowed four homers. Knox was a starter for the Leones throughout the winter.

Arnold Leon: Leon, who was acquired by the A's this winter from the Mexican League, had an impressive Mexican Winter League season. He went 6-0 with a 3.49 ERA in 30 relief appearances. He struck out 27 and walked nine in 28.1 innings.

Henry Rodriguez: Rodriguez, the flame-throwing right-hander, threw 44.1 innings for Zulia this winter. He had a 4.26 ERA with 46 strike outs and 29 walks. He allowed only 32 hits, but the walks hurt him.

Jose Rojas: The A's minor league Rule 5 pick-up has appeared in 17 games for the Caribes de Anzoategui. He had a 3.20 ERA in 19.2 innings. He struck out 26 and walked seven.
