More A's Players Set For Fall Baseball

After announcing that a contingent of seven players would be heading to the Arizona Fall League and Hawaii Winter Baseball league, the Oakland A's have added three more prospects to that mix. We have the details on the latest three winter/fall assignments inside...

Outman, Lansford Complete A's AFL Contingent

Lefty Josh Outman and right-hander Jared Lansford will be joining Andrew Bailey, Andrew Carignan, Adrian Cardenas, Josh Donaldson and Sean Doolittle as members of the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League, according to A's farm director Keith Lieppman.

Outman will be one of three players acquired by Oakland during the season representing the green-and-gold at the AFL. The lefty, who made his big league debut with the A's on Tuesday, was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies organization for Joe Blanton in July. Cardenas was also a part of that trade, and Donaldson was part of the package the A's received from the Chicago Cubs for Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin.

Outman appeared in 42 minor league games this season, 11 as a starter, and had a 3.11 ERA in 98.1 innings. He threw two scoreless innings in his big league debut. He had been a starter going into this season and the A's are still weighing whether to make him a starter or a reliever long-term. By getting a few more innings in at the AFL, Outman will be in a better position to be stretched out as a starter full-time next season, should the A's decide to go in that direction. He threw 159.1 innings in 2007.

Lansford also made the transition from starter to reliever this season, but that move appears to be for good. He was very successful as a reliever, posting a 3.76 ERA with 67 strike-outs in 55 innings as a reliever with High-A Stockton and allowing only two runs in 25.2 innings (0.70 ERA) as a reliever with Double-A Midland. Lansford pitched in the Hawaii Winter Baseball league last year. His older brother Josh, a prospect in the Chicago Cubs chain, participated in the AFL last year as a member of the Mesa Solar Sox.

Demel Heading West

Lieppman also indicated that reliever Sam Demel will be joining his current Stockton Ports' teammates Chris Carter and Corey Brown in the Hawaii Winter Baseball league.

Demel has acted as the Ports' closer for most of the 2008 season. The A's third round pick in 2007 has a 3.36 ERA and 18 saves in 67 innings this year. The hard-throwing right-hander has 90 strike-outs and has held opposing batters to a .227 average.
