Kane County Notebook: First Series Wrap

The Kane County Cougars got their season off to a fast start, taking two of three on the road against their rivals, the Peoria Chiefs. David Malamut delivers the highlights from that series.

The Cougars opened the first series of the year with a series win in Peoria. Winning two out of three games isn't a bad way to start out the season.

David Thomas has been a big hit so far. In the first two games he had two hits apiece, with three stolen bases all together. He also scored two runs. In the last game of the series, he went hitless, but walked once. Steve Kleen has been good in his return to the Cougars. He drove in four runs in the first three games.

In the first game of the year, the Cougars would lose, 4-1. David Thomas led off the year with a single to left center. He would be brought home by Jason Christian. The rest of the time the Cougars had their chances but couldn't get any runners around. Steve Kleen and Franklin Hernandez doubled. Matt Fitts pitched five innings giving up three hits and three runs. He would be perfect for the first 10 outs. A walk, a hit by pitch and a two run double did him in. Josue Selenes and Michael Hart pitched well in relief.

On Friday, the Cougars got the first win of the season, 3-2. Steve Kleen drove in two runs, and Mitchell LeVier drove in the other on a sacrifice fly. Thomas had two stolen bases. Shawn Haviland pitched the first five and a third. He gave up six hits and two runs. Kenneth Smalley, Leonardo Espinal and Jose Guzman came out of the bullpen and pitched well.

The second win of the year came in extra frames. The Cougars would need 10 innings to get a 3-2 win and the series win. Steve Kleen drove in Jason Christian to get the win. Juan Nunez, Matt Ray and Dusty Coleman all walked twice. Jamie Richmond, Scott Deal, Josue Selenes and Jose Guzman each pitched scoreless outings out of the pen.

Juan Nunez has an error in each game he has caught. Jason Christian has played third in each game. Grant Desme is hitless.
