Oakland A's MLN: DSL Season Underway

The midway point of the 2010 minor league regular season means the start of the short-season minor league schedule. One such league, the Dominican Summer League, is officially underway. We take a look at the Oakland A's Dominican Summer League team inside...

The Dominican Summer League season is five games in and the Oakland A's affiliate is off to a decent start, with a 3-2 record that puts them in a tie for first place with the DSL Cardinals in the Santo Domingo North Division.

The A's have a number of relatively high-profile names on their DSL roster this season, including the team's top 2009 international free agent signing, shortstop Wilfredo Solano. Solano has only two hits in his first 19 at-bats this season, but the 17-year-old has walked five times against three strike-outs.

Outfielder Jose Sayegh, who signed a six-figure deal with the A's in 2008, returns to the DSL for a second season. He struggled badly in 2009, batting .143 with 49 strike-outs in 31 games. The 18-year-old is 0-for-7 to start the 2010 season.

In addition to Solano, Wilman Martinez (3B) and Alfredo Sosa (OF) were the A's July 2nd international signings in 2009. Both are on the DSL squad this year. Martinez is 2-for-9 with two walks and Sosa is 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored to start the year.

Rodolfo Penalo (SS) and Dionisio Ramirez (C) were two of the A's most recent international signings and both are on the A's DSL squad. Penalo has a hit and an RBI in seven at-bats and Ramirez is 0-for-2 to start his career.

Leading the club offensively through the first five games are first-baseman Miguel Marte and shortstop Luis Baez. Marte, a 20-year-old from the Dominican Republic, has two homeruns and two doubles in his first 16 at-bats. Baez, a 19-year-old from the Dominican Republic, has a .364 average and four extra-base hits in 22 at-bats.

On the mound, the DSL A's have a 4.50 team ERA through five games. Robinson De Los Santos is off to a strong start, having allowed only one run on four hits in eight innings. He has eight strike-outs and two walks. De Los Santos threw four hitless innings in his last outing.

Injuries have followed the A's organization to the Dominican Republic. Four of the A's DSL players are starting the season on the disabled list and another, Alex Nolasco, is on the reserved list.
