A's Ink Three On July 2nd

Since 2008, the Oakland A's have been major players in the international market and that trend continued on Friday when the team announced the signing of three international free agents: Renato Nunez, Anderson Mata and Jose Torres.

July 2nd represents the first day that major league teams can sign 16-year-old international free agents and often is the day that the highest profile international amateurs are inked.

The Oakland A's announced three July 2nd signings on Friday, Venezuelans Renato Nunez, Anderson Mata and Jose Torres. According to Baseball America's Ben Badler, the A's signed Nunez for $2.2 million, which is expected to be one of the largest bonuses given out on July 2nd. It would also be the largest international amateur bonus the A's have given out since they signed Michael Ynoa to a record-breaking $4.2 million in 2008.

Badler has called Nunez one of the most advanced hitters in the July 2nd prospect group. Nunez is 6'1'', 185 pounds and he hails from Valencia, Venezuela. He is currently listed as a third baseman.

Mata is a left-handed pitcher from Margarita, Venezuela. He is listed at 5'11', 165 pounds. Torres is also a left-handed pitcher. He hails from Caracas, Venezuela, and is listed at 6'2'', 155.

All signings are still subject to approval by the MLB Commissioner's Office.

We will be hearing more about these three players from the A's Coordinator of International Operations/Baseball Operations Analyst Dan Kantrovitz in the coming days, so stay tuned...
