Gustavo Chacin was denied a chance to win his twelfth game of the season after he surrendered home runs to Dmitri Young and Magglio Ordonez but escaped with a no decision when the Blue Jays tied the game with a home run by Shea Hillenbrand and an RBI single from Aaron Hill in the sixth inning. Orlando Hudson completed the dramatic come-from-behind victory in the ninth with a walk-off home run against Chris Dingman to give Toronto a 4-3 win.
Despite having to come back and win the third game of their four-game set with Detroit, the Blue Jays would actually get off on the right foot against left-handed starter Nate Robertson in the second inning when Toronto would hit three consecutive single, the latter by Corey Koskie scoring Hillenbrand for an early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers would jump on the board in the fourth inning against Chacin when, with one on, Dmitri Young would crank a cut-fastball from the lefty into the seats in left-center for a two-run home run and a 2-1 lead.
Magglio Ordonez would strike again for the Tigers, this time a solo shot, to increase the oppositions lead to 3-1 after the top of the sixth inning.
The bottom half of the sixth is when the Blue Jay bats would awaken against Roberston when Shea Hillenbrand would tag his fifteenth home run of the season, a solo shot to deep left to cut the deficit to one. Later that inning, Toronto would even the score thanks to the suddenly hot Alex Rios who would single home Aaron Hill to tie the game at three.
Vinnie Chulk and Justin Speier would combine to pitch two and one-third effective shutout innings for the Jays before Orlando Hudson's dramatic walk-off home run with one out in the ninth.
Speier picks up the win in relief, improving his record to (2-2) on the season with Detroit interim closer Chris Dingman (0-1) taking the loss for the Tigers.
The Blue Jays will look to take three of four against the Tigers in an afternoon matinee at the Rogers Centre on Thursday when Scott Downs (0-2) will take on Detroit ace Jeremy Bonderman (13-8).
The game on Thursday can be seen on Rogers Sportsnet starting at 12:30pm EST with radio coverage on The FAN 590am.
InsideTheDome's Game Notes: Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay received some discouraging news on Wednesday when he experienced some pain in his left leg when pitching a simulated game…Orlando Hudson's ninth inning heroics were the third time he's won a game with a walk-off hit this season.
