BMLN: Patterson, Mathews Put Up Big Numbers

Monday was filled with outstanding performanced in the Blue Jays farm system. Ryan Patterson overshadowed Aaron Mathews, and many more superb performances like Josh Banks for Syracuse. Today's BMLN is a 'can't miss,' filled with extended stats, streaks and notes.



SkyChiefs Win in 12

Wayne Lydon got an RBI single with the game tied at one in the top of the 12th inning and Lee Gronkiewicz pitched a scoreless bottom of the 12th to preserve a 2-1 victory for Syracuse.

The SkyChiefs tied the game in the sixth inning when Ryan Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Sergio Santos, who led the inning off with a single.

Josh Banks started the game and pitched eight marvelous innings, allowing just three hits, and one run. The right-hander struck out a season high nine batters, and didn't issue a walk in the contest. It was not the first time this season Banks put up a high strikeout total. On April 18 he struck out eight batters without issuing a walk in 6 2/3 innings. In 41 innings this season, the 23-year-old has issued just five walks and had struck out 32 batters. Opponents are hitting .226 off Banks on the season, although he has allowed seven home runs, and has given up the long ball in five of his seven starts.

Adrian Burnside followed Banks with a scoreless ninth inning and has yet to allow a run in 11 2/3 innings this season. Burnside has recorded 13 strikeouts and issued just 2 walks. Jason Frasor picked up the victory tossing two innings, allowing just one hit and fanning four batters. Lee Gronkiewicz notched his seventh save with a scoreless 12th inning. It was his third save in four days.

Fisher Cats End Losing Streak

The Fisher Cats scored four runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 6-2 win over the Reading Phillies Monday night.

Chip Cannon began the scoring with his fifth home run of the season in the second inning to give New Hampshire a 1-0 lead. Four more runs came in the fourth inning. David Smith led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on a single by Chip Cannon. John Schneider followed up with his third double of the season to score Smith and send Cannon to third. Miguel Negron then hit into an RBI groundout to score Cannon and Eric Arnold capped the scoring with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot.

Jason Arnold made a spot start for the Fisher Cats and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while recording seven strikeouts. Jordan DeJong followed in relief and allowed just one unearned run in three innings for his first victory of the season. Tracy Thorpe pitched 1 2/3 perfect innings, and struck out two batters for his first save of the season.

Arnold has fanned 24 batters in 16 innings this season with New Hampshire, while holding opponents to a .224 batting average against mark. Thorpe has issued just one run in 9 1/3 innings this season. The run that he allowed was given up on April 9, his first outing of the season. Since then the right-hander has struck out 11 batters while issuing 4 walks in 9 innings.

Cannon finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but also struck out twice in the game. Schneider went 2-for-3 in the victory. Cannon has five home runs on the year, but just fourteen runs batted in. He has struck out at least one time in each of his last five games, and on the season has fanned 35 times in 103 at bats.

Adam Lind went 1-for-5 to extend his hit streak to four games.

Perfect Night for Dunedin

Ryan Patterson and Aaron Mathews combined for 12 of the 21 hits that Dunedin had Monday night as they rolled to a 19-12 victory over Vero Beach.

Patterson shattered the Florida State League record for total bases. Patterson's record 17 total bases came from three home runs, two doubles and single. He drove in nine runs in the victory, just one shy of the league record. Mathews meanwhile went 6-for-7 with six runs scored. He was 6-for-6 before grounding into a double play in the ninth inning.

The six hits for Patterson and Mathews were both career high's in professional baseball. Patterson is hitting .448 (13-29) on the season with runners in scoring position, meanwhile four of his eight home runs have come with men in scoring position. Just two of his home runs on the year have been with nobody on base. Against right-handed pitching on the season, Patterson is hitting .344 (33-96), but against left-handers he is batting just .250 (7-28).

Over his last two games Mathews has seen his average rise from .209 to .315 after batting 8-for-11 with eight runs scored. The outfielder is hitting 10-for-18 over his last four games.

Ron Davenport, who finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored, hit his second home run of the season. Robinzon Diaz hit his first home run of the year in the fourth inning and drove in four runs in the game. Eric Nielsen went 2-for-6 with two runs batted in. Dustin Majewski also drove in two runs and reached base five times, once with a double and four more times with a walk.

Diaz extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Danny Core picked up the victory, despite allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings. Core finished the game with a game high six strikeouts. Kyle Yates made his first appearance since being sent down from New Hampshire, and pitched a scoreless inning out of the pen, recording two strikeouts.

Core has fanned 23 batters while issuing just 3 walks in 22 innings this season. It was the fourth time in eleven games that he struck out three or more batters out of the bullpen.

Home Sweet Home

The Lansing Lugnuts entered Monday's game with a four game losing streak, and having dropped six of their last eight games, all on the road. On Monday they defeated Kane County 9-4 and extended their home winning streak to eight consecutive games.

Lansing exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning. Sean Shoffit began the scoring with a RBI double. Jacob Butler then belted his fourth home run of the season to give Lansing a 4-1 lead. After a walk by Brian Pettway and a David Hicks single, Josh Bell doubled to right field to score both runners. Anthony Hatch capped off the scoring with his first home run of the season.

Lansing got its first run of the game when Brian Pettway smacked a solo home run to left-center. It was his sixth homer of the season. Pettway leads the Lugnuts with six home runs, but has also struck out 35 times in 105 at bats on the season.

Shoffit finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles. Bell finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in.

Aaron Wideman picked up his first victory of the season, allowing a run on three hits in five innings. Joey McLaughlin pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
