Winter Ball: Cannon Launches Another Homer

Chip Cannon belted his fourth home run of the Fall League, while Kyle Yates, Tracy Thorpe and Jordan DeJong also made appearances on the mound. Cannon is among the league leaders in home runs, while Yates leads all pitchers in strikeouts.

Chip Cannon hit his fourth home run of the Arizona Fall League on Tuesday afternoon. The home run came on a first pitch fastball by starter Dave Davidson. Cannon added another RBI in the fifth inning, when he hit a sacrifice fly off Judd Songster.

Cannon finished the afternoon 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI, and a run scored. He's now batting .324 this fall and is second in the league in home runs. Tuesday also marked just the third time in eleven games, which Cannon didn't strike out in a game.

Kyle Yates was one of three Jays' pitchers who saw action on Tuesday. Yates came on in the top of the fourth inning and quickly retired the first two batters of the innings, before allowing a two-out single to Neil Walker, who advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Kevin Richardson.

Yates was strong in his second inning of work, striking out Travis Metcalf and Joseph Koshansky for the first and final outs of the innings. In between he allowed a walk, a pop out to short, and a single.

The sixth inning was the strongest for Yates, who needed just ten pitches to retire the side in order, including a strikeout of Nolan Reimold.

The right-hander, came out to begin the seventh inning, and quickly got Richardson and Travis Metcalf to ground out to third, and was relieved by Jordan DeJong after issuing a walk to Mitch Maier.

DeJong faced just one batter, as he walked Troy Tulowitzki, and was immediately relieved.

Tracy Thorpe began the ninth inning for Phoenix, but struggled allowing three singles and a triple, leading to three runs being scored.

Yates went 3 2/3 innings allowing a run on three hits, while walking two batters and fanning three. He lowered his ERA to 1.86 this fall and has fanned 13 batters. Yates also leads the Arizona Fall League in strikeouts.

Thorpe, on the other hand, pitched just 1/3 of an inning issuing four hits, and three runs.
