Spurling Traded to Detroit
Chris Spurling, the Braves 2003 Rule V draft pick has been traded to the Detroit Tigers for Matt Coenen. Spurling, who had a 3.00 ERA in 6 innings this spring was selected from Pittsburgh in the Rule V draft. By terms of Rule V draft picks, Spurling had to either remain on the Braves 25-Man roster or be returned to Pittsburgh. Coenen, a 2001 second-round pick, is probably a better long-term prospect that Spurling. He had a 3.38 ERA in 28 starts for Single-A West Michigan last year. He was the 65th pick overall (2nd Round) in the 2001 Amateur Draft out of Charleston Southern University. Though a little old (23), he will probably begin the 2003 season with Single A Myrtle Beach.
