When Andy Pratt was traded to the Braves in exchange for young lefty Ben Kozlowski it was looked at by many as a steal for Texas. Pratt, a good pitching prospect who just hadn't ever put it together for Kozlowksi who was coming off great years in the Atlanta organization while Pratt had been even placed on waivers by Texas. Some even declared it as a move to "repay" Texas GM John Hart after John Schuerholz traded "damaged goods" in pitcher Rich Rodriguez early in the Spring.
Their claims held true for the first half of last year as Andy Pratt mightly struggled in AA-Greenville and Ben Kozlowski pitched superbly for Texas's AA team. However, despite his terrible record at the time, Pratt was called up to AAA-Richmond and stunned Scouts and Braves fans alike by pitching dominantly. He threw a one hitter which some described as the most dominating game thrown in Richmond in years. Pratt recovered, and hasn't looked back ever since.
Pratt had a promising 2003 Spring Training, but his inconsistency with Balls and Strikes and that is what eventually did him in. After throwing 10 straight balls to begin the game, Andy Pratt proceeded to give up 7 runs in one inning against the LA Dodgers in a move that sealed his fate, and solidified Jung Bong's spot in the bullpen.
Pratt will begin the season as AAA Richmond's staff ace, and if anyone struggles in the rotation or the bullpen he could be the one to get the call.
