R-Braves: Hens Sweep Braves

Richmond dropped both ends of Thursday's against the Toledo Mudhens in a doubleheader to fall to 4-10.

TOLEDO, OH—Kevin Witt connected on a game-winning home run in the seventh inning as the Toledo Mud Hens toppled the Richmond Braves 2-1 to sweep a doubleheader at Fifth Third Field Thursday.

With one out, Witt knocked his fourth homer of the season to snap a 1-1 tie. Craig Monroe tied the score in the first inning with an RBI triple for Toledo, which has now won four straight. Corey Brittan (1-1) allowed a hit and struck out one in three scoreless innings of relief for the win.

Stubby Clapp went 2-for-3 for Richmond, hitting a double in the first inning and later scoring on a Mike Hessman single. Buddy Hernandez (2-2) gave up Witt's home run to drop his second straight decision.

Toledo took the first game of the twinbill 3-2 behind starter Andy Van Hekken (1-2). The Mud Hens' left-hander fired five innings of four-hit baseball to earn his first win of the year. Fernando Rodney recorded his second save with a scoreless seventh.

Monroe had an RBI single and Ernie Young ripped a run-scoring double in the first inning for Toledo. Danny Klassen drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to give the Mud Hens a 3-0 lead. Travis Wilson laced an RBI single in the fifth frame and Bo Porter doubled home a run in the sixth for Richmond. Derrick Lewis (0-2) surrendered three runs and four hits in five innings for the loss.

The Braves and Hens meet again Friday with Toledo's Nate Robertson taking the hill opposite Richmond's Andy Pratt. Friday's game can be heard on WXGI AM 950 beginning at 6:45 with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
