Zeke Spruill has been one of the most frustrating pitchers in the Atlanta system over the past several seasons. But he might be changing that this year.
Spruill pitched a complete game shutout Monday night for his second win of the season. He allowed only three hits to Kinston, did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Spruill is now 2-4 with a 2.88 ERA in eight starts. He's got five quality starts on the season, with 40 hits allowed in 50 innings, only seven walks and 41 strikeouts.
Spruill has been inconsistent at times in the last three years, along with several suspensions for immature behavior. But the Braves were patient with him, feeling Spruill just needed to grow up a bit. They always believed in his stuff, and in spring training it was obvious he was turning the corner.
Coaches noticed how good Spruill's stuff was in March, even saying he could get big league hitters out right now with the way he was pitching. He's making a strong case to move up to Double-A later this season if he continues his good work.
