Right-hander J.J. Hoover made his Triple-A debut on Tuesday as Gwinnett hosted Rochester.
Hoover did not figure into the decision. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings, with four walks and three strikeouts. All the hits were singles, as the Red Wings scored two runs in the first and two in the second inning.
Hoover was promoted to Gwinnett to replace Julio Teheran, who will make the start for Atlanta in Arizona on Wednesday. Hoover was 1-3 in Double-A Mississippi with a 2.16 ERA. He had four quality starts in seven starts, with 36 hits allowed in 41.2 innings, 10 walks and 41 strikeouts.
Hoover's promotion to Gwinnett over Randall Delgado shows how the Braves feel about him. While Delgado is considered the better prospect, it does tell you how Hoover is regarded by his promotion.
The 23-year-old Hoover made four starts in Double-A last year, so he could stick in Triple-A, particularly with Jacob Thompson retiring on Sunday opening up another spot in the Gwinnett rotation.
