A look at 6 Braves position player prospects

Bill Shanks looks at six position player prospects who you should keep an eye on this summer.

Mississippi shortstop Tyler Pastornicky is really becoming an interesting prospect. Acquired last year in the Yunel Escobar trade from Toronto, Pastornicky is now hitting .304 on the season with five home runs, 31 RBI, 13 stolen bases and a .351 on base percentage. Since May 1, Pastornicky has hit .322 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 121 at bats.

Also in Mississippi, catcher Matt Kennelly is getting on the radar. He's got an 11-game hitting streak since May 17, with a .381 average and three RBI. For the season, Kennelly is now at .319. Kennelly signed in 2005 out of Australia, but he's still only 22 years old. The Braves may look to Kennelly next year as a third catcher to back up David Ross.

In Lynchburg Adam Milligan is quickly becoming the top power hitting prospect for the Braves. Since he came off the disabled list on May 18, Milligan has hit .343 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 18 games. Milligan must cut down on his strikeouts, but he's putting together a solid season in the Carolina League.

Hillcats' second baseman Phil Gossellin is having a solid season. Since May 1, Gossellin has hit .303 with 20 RBI. For the season he's now hitting .284 with one home run, 30 RBI and a .341 on base percentage. The Braves have been pleased with the progress of Gossellin, last year's fifth round pick out of Virginia.

Rome catcher Christian Bethancourt could soon find his way in Virginia if he keeps up his good work at the plate. Bethancourt has hit .371 in his last 15 games, since May 14, with three home runs and 13 RBI. Since May 1, Bethancourt has hit .310. The Braves might ship him up to Lynchburg any day now.

And finally, while his defense has been horrible, Edward Salcedo is on a 10-game hitting streak. He's hit .316 with four home runs in that span. For the season, Salcedo now has a .275 batting average, seven home runs and 24 RBI. Salcedo does, however, have 21 errors on the season.
