The Atlanta Braves finished the month of June with a 17-9 record after the series sweep in Seattle. They are 4.5 games behind the Phillies, with Philadelphia ending its month Thursday afternoon against Boston.
Brian McCann had a fantastic month of June for Atlanta. He hit .342 with eight home runs and 18 RBI in 79 at bats. McCann's on base percentage for that month was .435.
Surprisingly, in the 10 games he's played since coming off the disabled list, Nate McLouth has a .400 on base percentage. His average is only .192, but McLouth has eight walks at the bottom of the batting order.
Brooks Conrad was 8-19 in June, with two home runs and four RBI. But his bench comrade Eric Hinske followed up his strong month of May with a poor June, as he hit .154 in 52 at bats. Hinske did have three home runs and four RBI.
Freddie Freeman continues to improve as the season rolls along. He hit .287 in June with four home runs and 17 RBI. But his best friend, Jason Heyward, hit .264 without a home run in the 14 games he played since coming off the disabled list.
Jordan Schafer had a .214 batting average in June, and his OBP was only .260. He did steal eight bases.
Alex Gonzalez had a rough month. He hit only .176 with a .219 OBP, two home runs and eight RBI.
The Braves hit .222 as a team in June.
The pitching staff had a 3.21 ERA, with the bullpen coming in at 3.07 and the rotation at 3.28.
Eric O'Flaherty battled back issues, but he was outstanding in June with a 0.82 ERA in 12 games. Scott Linebrink was also solid, with a 2-0 record and a 1.50 ERA in 13 June appearances.
Closer Craig Kimbrel had eight saves in June and posted a 1.93 ERA. He had only five walks and 25 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched.
With a couple of rough outings in the last few days, Jonny Venters finished June with a 3.63 ERA. He did strike out 24 batters in 17.1 innings of work.
The best starter in June was Tommy Hanson. Despite missing two weeks to rest his shoulder, Hanson had four starts and had a 4-0 record with a 2.16 ERA. Hanson also had 32 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched, with only 14 hits allowed.
Brandon Beachy was 2-0 in his return from the DL, with a 1.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 12 innings.
Tim Hudson had five starts in June and had a 2.89 ERA with his 2-2 record. Jair Jurrjens was 3-2 and had a 3.30 ERA. Derek Lowe finally got a win in the last game of the month on Wednesday. His ERA for June was 4.41.
