Marquis leads Richmond over Pawtucket 6-4
The Richmond Braves got a solid outing from Jason Marquis and balanced hitting from the offense to defeat Pawtucket 6-4 on Wednesday.
Marquis (2-1) pitched 6.1 innings, allowed one run on four hits, walked two, and struck out six.
The Braves had a potent offensive attack to give Marquis good support. Wilson Betemit raised his average to .275 with a 3 for 4 effort. Designated hitter Travis Wilson was 3 for 5 with a RBI. Mike Hessman added two RBI, and Johnny Estrada was 2 for 4.
Richmond (16-16) finishes its four game series with Pawtucket Thursday with John Ennis (2-1) scheduled to be the starting pitcher.
G-Braves beat Tennessee in rain shortened game
The Greenville Braves scored five in the fifth inning and continued a productive offensive week in beating the Tennessee Smokies 10-5 Wednesday afternoon in a game called after five innings due to rain.
James Jurries hit his second home run of the season, a three run shot to pace a five run fifth inning. Adam LaRoche was 1 for 3 with 3 RBI including a 2 run single in the sixth inning. Pete Orr was 1 for 3 with a RBI and pitcher Roman Colon had a run scoring single.
Colon won his third game of the season going 5 innings and allowing 5 runs on 6 hits. He walked one and struck out two.
Greenville has game three of the series with Tennessee Thursday night with Matt Belisle (1-4) on the mound.
Pelicans lose suspended game from Tuesday 4-3 in 10 innings, lose nightcap 7-3
Myrtle Beach and Potomac finished a game that had been suspended due to rain on Tuesday and went extra innings Wednesday afternoon. The Cannons won the suspended game 4-3 in 10 innings.
The game was tied at 2 in the tenth inning when Potomac scored on a two run double by Jesse Guitierrez. The Pelicans scored a run in the bottom of the tenth but came up short.
Daniel Curtis took over for Matt Coenen, who pitched the first few innings Tuesday night, and went six innings Wednesday. Curtis allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out ten batters. Ralph Roberts pitched the final two innings and took the loss (1-2).
In the regularly scheduled game, Potomac beat Myrtle Beach 7-3. The Pelicans used a trio of relievers in the game, and the Cannons were able to score seven times. Paul Bush (1-3) went three innings in his first start of the season and took the loss.
Pelicans catcher Brayan Pena hit a two run home run (1) in the seventh inning.
Myrtle Beach (10-20) now hits the road for an eight game in seven day road trip
Rome Braves sweep doubleheader from Asheville
The Rome Braves got more great starting pitching and clutch hits from Yaron Peters to sweep a double header from the Asheville Tourists.
In the first game, Kyle Davies continued his dominance of the South Atlantic League by winning his third game of the season. Davies went five scoreless innings, allowed only two hits, walked one, and struck out five.
Davies now has an ERA of 1.30 for the season. He has allowed only 9 hits in 27.2 innings pitched.
Rome got a run in the third inning on a RBI double by Onil Joseph. Then in the 7th inning, Rome got an insurance run on a RBI single from Yaron Peters.
The Tourists scored one run off Rome reliever Jose Rodriquez in the bottom of the seventh. Rodriquez pitched two innings to pick up his first save of the season.
In the second game, Rome scored three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, and two in the sixth inning. Yaron Peters was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI. Peters now has his average up to .313 and has 16 RBI on the season.
Jeff Francoeur one of the hitting heroes with a 3 for 4 performance driving in 3 RBI. Francoeur is now hitting .293 with 13 RBI.
Matt Merricks pitched five solid innings to pick up his third win of the season. Merricks allowed only one run on six hits, walked two, and struck out two. Merricks is now 3-2 with an ERA of 3.04.
Rome is now 19-12 on the season. They will play game three of the series in Asheville on Thursday. Blaine Boyer (1-2) is scheduled to pitch for Rome.
