Braves Minor League Report

Bill Shanks checks up on the minor leagues and what's going on so far.

The Braves lead the International League in team pitching, with a 2.79 ERA. Seven pitchers have an ERA under 3.00. Cory Gearrin has been perhaps the most impressive pitcher, as he has yet to allow an earned run in five relief appearances. Gearrin has 11 strikeouts and only two walks in 10 innings pitched. Gwinnett's other relievers have been great as well. Buddy Carlyle, Dusty Hughes, Jaye Chapman, Jason Rice and Adam Russell have a combined ERA of 1.44.

Third baseman Joey Terdoslavich is hitting .250 so far with two home runs and six RBI. Jordan Parraz (.310) has continued his good work from spring training so far.

The Braves have only two home runs in 12 games and both belong to minor league veteran Ian Gac. Andrelton Simmons is off to a good start after missing the first few games of the season. He's hitting .300 in 30 at bats. Phil Gosselin has started hot, hitting .318.

Mississippi has also had great work from its relievers. Gary Moran, Billy Bullock, Mark Lamm, Andrew Russell and Cory Rasmus have combined for an ERA of 0.70.

The Hillcats lead the Carolina League with a .312 team batting average in the first 10 games. They also lead in runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI and OBP. Evan Gattis leads the league with a .455 batting average. Robby Hefflinger is sixth with a .375 batting average. Nick Ahmed leads the league with five stolen bases.

Gus Schlosser, Aaron Northcraft and Cody Martin have been solid in the rotation. Martin has 14 strikeouts in 11 innings so far. Matt Chaffee has two saves, despite a 16.87 ERA due to one awful appearance.

The Braves have a .203 team batting average, which is tied with Augusta for last in the Sally League. They have scored only 36 runs in 11 games. Kyle Kubitza is the one player off to a decent start, with three home runs and nine RBI. But he's struck out 16 times in 41 at bats.

Could David Filak be emerging as a serious prospect? He's got a 2.40 ERA in three starts and leads the Sally League with 22 strikeouts.
