The Braves gladly activated Evan Gattis from the disabled list Monday, but it meant young catcher Christian Bethancourt had to go back to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Bethancourt played in 13 games and hit .240 with three runs batted in. He had 12 hits in 50 at bats, with one double and two walks.
Defensively, Bethancourt threw out only one of seven potential baserunners. But Bethancourt did show off his strong arm and did show his ability to work well with pitchers.
The Braves are going to eventually have a decision to make. Bethancourt did show that he can play in the big leagues, but he's obviously blocked by Gattis right now. However, will Gattis be able to stay at catcher? While he is under control for four more seasons after 2014, how long can Gattis stay behind the plate considering he is 27 years old.
Would the Braves be better off trading Gattis now in a big trade and giving the starting catcher's job to Bethancourt? Or might Bethancourt be the trade chip?
The Braves could simply allow Bethancourt to replace Gerald Laird as the backup catcher next season. Laird is a free agent and is not expected back.
Either way, the Braves' glimpse at Bethancourt showed them the options they will have moving forward at that position.
