Wood pitches well but Braves can't score

Alex Wood continued his good work Tuesday but to no avail.

The numbers are staggering. Alex Wood has been outstanding in the last couple of months of the season, but the Braves give him little run support when he is on the mound.

Tuesday against the Pirates Wood allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 6.2 innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. But the Braves could score only two runs and lost to Pittsburgh 3-2 in game two of the series at Turner Field.

Wood's record is now 11-11 on the season and his ERA is still at 2.78 on the season. He's allowed 151 hits in 171.2 innings pitched. In four September starts, Wood is 1-1 but has allowed only six earned runs in 26.2 innings (2.03 ERA).

In Wood's last 11 starts, since July 30, he's 4-3 with an ERA of 1.89. Wood has allowed 56 hits in 76 innings, with 16 earned runs, 21 walks and 76 strikeouts. In Wood's 24 games as a starter this season, he's 8-10 with an ERA of 2.59. He's allowed 132 hits in 156.1 innings, 39 walks and 151 strikeouts.

The Braves have scored 53 runs in Wood's 24 starts - 2.2 runs per game.

The Braves have now lost five games in a row. They are now 76-81 on the season, which means Atlanta will not have a winning season. The Braves are 24-38 since the All-Star Break and since the hot start in April (17-7), the team is 59-74.

Atlanta is now 4-16 in September and they have scored two runs or less in 14 of those 20 games. Overall, the Braves have scored 42 runs in 20 games (2.1 runs per game).

The Braves have been shut out 16 times this season. They have scored only one run in 24 games. They are 4-20 in those games. So the Braves have scored less than two runs in 40 games (4-36). The Braves have scored two runs in a game 22 times (4-18). The Braves have scored less than three runs in 62 games, which is 39.4% of the season. They are 8-54 in those games.

Atlanta will face former farmhand Jeff Locke (7-5, 3.60) on Wednesday as the Pirates try to win the four-game series. Julio Teheran (13-13, 2.88) will pitch for the Braves. Game time is 7:10
