Timetables for the new Braves prospects

Mike Foltynewicz is one of the many new pitchers in the Atlanta farm system. What is the timetable for him and the other newcomers?

Let’s look at the potential minor league landing spots for the young pitchers acquired and also their ETA for Atlanta.

Mike Foltynewicz – RHP - 23 years old – will likely start out at Triple-A but is not far away. Will he refine his command to stay in a rotation or become a flame-throwing closer? ETA: 2015.

Andrew Thurman – RHP – 23 years old – Since he was a college pitcher in Low-A last year, the Braves may push him to AA to start 2015. He’ll definitely be there at some point this season. ETA: 2017.

Ricardo Sanchez – LHP – will be 18 years old in April – Pitched in the equivalent of the GCL last year for the Angels. Will the Braves keep him to go to Danville or be tempted to send him to Rome? ETA: 2018

Manny Banuelos – LHP – will be 24 years old in March – Would it be better to see him get significant innings in AAA? Yes. Will he pitch in Atlanta in 2015? Yes. ETA: 2015.

Max Fried – LHP – Turns 21 next Wednesday – Will be out all of 2015 with TJ. Could start 2016 in either High-A or Double-A. ETA: Late 2017

Aaron Kurcz – RHP – 24 years old – After missing 2013 with TJ, he pitched 34 games in AA. So he could start back in AA or go up to AAA. A reliever with promise. ETA: 2016.

Tyrell Jenkins – RHP – 22 years old – Needs to go up to AA after 13 starts in High-A last season and a good appearance in the Arizona Fall League. ETA: 2017.

Arodys Vizcaino – RHP – 24 years old – Still young and showed great velo late last season after finally being past the TJ. Will compete for a job in the Atlanta bullpen this March. ETA:2015

Zach Quintana - RHP – Turns 21 years old in April – Don’t forget about him. A third rounder in 2012 acquired for Kyle Wren. Might go in the Carolina rotation in High-A. ETA: 2018.

That’s nine young pitchers between the ages of 18 and 24. Also, the Braves went after pitchers that had been pretty high draft picks.

2010 Draft – Foltynewicz (19th pick in the 1st round) and Jenkins (50th pick in the 1st round)
2011 Draft – Kurcz (11th round pick)
2012 Draft – Fried (7th pick in the 1st round) and Quintana (3rd round pick)
2013 Draft – Thurman (2nd round pick)
